Hammer is supposed to be 20% faster than the XP at the same clock speed and be introduced at ~2.5 gig...And the server version looks like it will support 8 way:Q I think I am in love.

It was recently demonstrated running Windows XP 32 bit and a 64 bit Linux OS! The 64 bit Linux was running a 32 bit and 64 bit program at the same time! There is also a strong rumour that a 64 bit version of WinXP is closer than anyone might have thought.

The AMD reference board a.k.a. Solo

Most of this stuff is way over my head and will remain that way but I do have a question. Look at the picture of the motherboard and tell me what is that PCI slot that is located nearer to the edge of the motherboard than the other normal looking ones?

Because it is not a PCI slot :) It is an ACR Slot (Audio, Communications Riser) :)

Bascially it will end up being an used slot for sound cards, modems or NICs that rely too much on the CPU for our taste. OEMs will probably be the ones to make use of it.

Thanks Crazee and I love the AMD sense of humor. :D

<< Now for a look at the humor of AMD Engineers linky >>

That's a good one. :D

/me reminds himself to save his money to get one of these boards and the processor and ram to go with it when they come out.

Actually, that article wasn't saying Hammer would be 20% faster at the same clock, it was saying that memory access latencies can be reduced by as much as a factor of 20 from a chipset based memory controller (depending on the final clock speed of the CPU which we estimate to start above 2.5 GHz).

According to AMD CEO Jerry Sanders, Hammer will be 30-50% faster than the Athlon XP at the same clock speed. It has been calculated that ClawHammer will be about 30% faster than the Athlon XP at the same clock speed (in integer performance. It will be lower than that in FP performance), and SledgeHammer will be more than 30% faster than the Athlon XP at the same clock speed (50% probably isn't that realistic though).

If you look in Usenet in a.b.w you might find an interesting post by someone named JayJay. ;)

BTW, no I haven't decompressed it to look at it yet and I don't even have the required hardware to run it.

Edit: Heh, just tried to unpack it and the post is incomplete anyway. Still, someone's got it an alpha/beta or something out there. It'll probably be reposted again.

What's "a.b.w."?

Forget SMP, get more machines, better performance. *AND* you can probably run an great OS like OpenBSD :D

I'm sure you'd like to get 16, but I'm trying to be a little bit more realistic - after all, my fleet (with the exception of a single Athlon 700) is based entirely at home, so I am the one who'd be paying for them.. no company to help to me out there.

Well, i am being realistic.......

in the world where i earn about £1,000,000 a year! :Q

Put me down for 1 then! That's about all i'll be able to afford anyway! :( Actually, make that 0.5 of one! :S

NWM, don't you just hate these ppl who have all their work fleets, which they pay no money towards, whereas we have to cope with just the ones we buy with our own, hard earned money! ;)

Well I am happy with the two 2000 XPs that my AMD rep is going to give me next week :) Now do I pop them in the dualie and put the 1.2MPs in new systems or do I just do new systems with the 2000s :D

Give me one of them and use the other one as your main rig, and leave the 1.2MPs in the dualie :)

You know it will be wayyyy to expensive to build up 2 whole machines, so relieve the burden from yourself and do the right thing, send one of those XP2000+'s over my way! :)

Well, here's a decent price on an MP 1800 (it's refurb but it's more likely a return...how can you refurb a CPU?)
