Hammer won't be released until Late 2003!!! ***UPDATED!! Official Repsonse From AMD Good news ***

thanks Evan for the good news!
Here's the official word from AMD's Damon Muzny on Hammer:

AMD's guidance regarding the roadmap introduction schedule for the Hammer processors has not changed. We expect system availability for the desktop Hammer to be in late Q103 or early Q203. Likewise, the upcoming AMD Opteron processor is on track to be available in the 1H03 for the server and workstation markets. Strategy-wise, AMD is focused right now on the server space as Opteron will give us a clear performance advantage vs. the competition in the enterprise server market.

In other words, this whole thing seems to be a misunderstanding according to AMD.

A major shift in AMD's marketing strategy in launching its next generation Hammer family of processors came to light in the analysts conference call. Rob Herb, executive vice president of sales and marketing, said the Opteron server version of Hammer to be introduced in mid-2003 will precede the Athlon desktop Hammer chip.

Originally the Athlon desktop Hammer was slated to be introduced in Q4 '02 and then slipped to the first quarter of 2003, and now won't come to market until late next year.

Oh well...looks like my next system is going to be a Hyperthreaded P4. AMD just keeps fvcking up. I've been AMD exclusive for years now because of the price/performance...but now Intel is closing the gap and making AMD look extremely amateur.

AMD apparently feels confident that Barton (coupled with nForce2) will provide enough performance for the desktop market for a while yet.

Those who remember my argument with PM will recall him doubting that the Athlon would get as high as 2.5 gigahertz. KYle Bennet has already shown 2.5 gig is well within the athlons capabilities. The Barton core expected to top out around 2.8 - 2.9 gig. I'd say this new LUIGI stepping AMD is trying out will extend that to approx 3.2 gig, maybe beyond.

Well I hope I won't need a new rig before then. So at least I can give AMD a last chance before I go back to Intel. At least I can trust them. 🙁

Greg, (with some reservations of this turning into a "Gstanfor bashing Intel employees" thread), one reviewer with one sample hitting 2.5ghz is definitely not the same as "well within capabilities." Just like one reviewer with one poor overclocking sample is not indicative of poor scaling. If 2.5ghz was easy for the Athlon, we wouldn't be seeing the non-existant supplies of 2.25ghz chips.

So, the jury is still out on what speeds the K7 is really capable of.

However "confident" they are of Barton, is not the reason for Hammer slipping. Trust me, if they could release Hammer yesterday, they would've.

ultimatebob, having a prototype and a few samples is definitely not nearly the same thing as being able to manufacture a cpu in quantity.

HAHA that is all BS!!!!!!!!! Just because someone writes something it doesnt make it true! Besides a whole year delay for a chip that is already sampling is pure crap! tomshardware already has a fully functional Hammer motherboard. There is opteron sampling @ over 2 ghz which is 400 mhz faster than what it was originally suppose to come out at. Give me a break! Yeah and reviewer after reviewer said that AMD would never go to 333fsb! You never know what AMD has planned and for all you know or anyone but AMD execs know is that the hammer could be ready today. I say Hammer will be out Jan 03 at the latest!

I've emailed AMD's Damon Muzny about all of this, as even we are unaware of this particular delay. I'll post the feedback not under NDA in this thread if you guys like once I get a reply...

If Barton ever is released at 3.2GHz, I'll eat every piece of clothing i'm wearing right now. I don't think the current Athlon core could ever reach that high, even with a .09u process. Maybe they will prove me wrong, but I just can't believe that. Either way, the "PR3400+" launch of Hammer will be good for a laugh if it doesnt get here before late '03. It may be a good midrange chip at that point, but not much more.

This is really awful. While I hope it's a mispring, I don't think it is..... 🙁

The same thing that happened to the P!!! will soon happen to the athlon. AMD won't be able to scale it, they'll be outperformed...the worst thing is, AMD will not be able to handle the tough times like Intel did.

Great. That means I'm going P4 or mac.

mmm...with all the stuff surrounding PowerPC 970...and OSX...

damn, I want a TiBook and a dual PowerPC 970 system 😀

You could not of read my mind better. It will probably be time for me to switch totaly over to Macs.....

I completely disagree with you guys.

AMD is finally getting smart. It's a recession (more or less) right now. Now is NOT the time to introduce a new product - rather it is best to perfect Hammer now when times are bad.

I think AMD has enough confidence (and cash) to carry it through for awhile. They must firmly believe that the Hammer will leapfrog Intel's offering next year and sales will greatly increase in better economic times when people have more cash to spend and a reason to upgrade.

I am not going to debate anyone on this as this is just my reasoning and my "take" on the situation.

We'll see.
