The Halo Wars demo hit the Xbox Live Marketplace tonight. It's 1.40GB in size (!), but I haven't been able to snag it yet due to some bunk error on Xbox Live Marketplace. Perhaps the server is getting hammered. There is also a sweepstakes entry download under the Halo Wars entry on the marketplace, so be sure to enter!

Queue up the demo

how in the hell do you zoom out? i adjusted the setting for zoom in the menu but it doesnt appear to do anything. hmm...

I saw something this morning about the demo "coming soon" but didn't realize it was already out.

Dunno how I feel about RTS' on consoles, I have the LotR 360 game and it works decently well...might give it a whirl.

Well this is the first RTS game that was built completely with the console in mind. All the others were basically ports from PC RTSs. So, it will be interesting to see how Ensemble pulled this off.

Last I heard, MS came out and said that there would be no PC version of Halo Wars.

I'm shorting the shit out of this on SimEx, so I hope it's terrible and fails miserably.

Why?

Because I don't think it will sell anywhere near the projected 3.15 million copies.

but why do you hope it's terrible and fails miserably?

Because "I'm shorting the shit out of this on SimEx".

I thought EndWar was consoles only, and made with that in mind?

No, EndWar is coming to the PC too. They tried to come up with some tricks to make it easier to use on the console, like voice controls, but it still like a PC RTS ported to a console (IMO). Everything in Halo Wars was designed for console...from the controls, to the unit selection, to the pace of combat, to inventory management, etc.

I am addicted to it. Some of the people on it are hardcore, but I like to bank on the clueless fans who will load up on a stock just because they like the IP. Halo Wars is bit of a gamble, as it's an RTS which has historically done god-awful on consoles. But it has the Halo name tied to it, which is huge.

I'm of the mentality that Halo fans aren't interested in the RTS genre, and the game will fail. Even if it doesn't fail completely - 3.15 million units sold is in Fable II or Little Big Planet territory, which is absurd for this kind of game.

3mil units? Not a chance. More like 1, maybe.

It's an enjoyable game, and I'll get it to learn a bit about the battles pre-Halo, but if it wasn't Halo-branded, I'd probably skip it.

Controls are interesting, I'd never played an RTS on console before this one. Left stick moves the camera, right stick zooms. "A" is select, "X" is action, hold "A" and you get a selection circle (no drawing your own), double-tap "A" on a unit selects all of that unit type. "X" is, as mentioned, action, so you use "X" to attack, move, garrison, etc. when you have units selected.

Base building is pretty simplified. You have a station with pads around it, and you select structures from the pads. Barracks, resource, vehicles, power. Resources are simplified and sent in automatically by your ship from orbit, or can be collected on the field. There's a unit cap, of course.

Combat is simplified. Click "X" on an enemy unit and your unit attacks it. "Y" is special attack (like ramming for Warthogs, that's always fun). Units can be upgraded (Warthogs get a grenadier, Marines get rockets for their special attack), buildings too.

It's all pretty seamless and intuitive, IMO. Despite everything being streamlined, it still feels "right". I just wish you could zoom in closer.

Oh, and the new AI is better looking than Cortana 😛

Pretty fun, I still think it would have been better suited for PC but I guess due to the franchise that won't happen for awhile (or ever).

Is a version for PC planned to be released eventually?

Microsoft shot the company that made it in the back of the head during the development of Halo Wars, so I doubt that they will bother ever porting it.

<sigh> I'm 40% through downloading this demo. Have to leave in about 40 minutes to go to my daughter's winter program.

Will Queasy be able to squeeze some time in with this tonight?

I tried this out while waiting for my killzone 2 demo to download and I really liked it. I mean, it isn't amazing but it's a lot better than I thought it would be so far.

I thought it was decent. I'd rather play a RTS on a PC, but they did a decent job of making it console-appropriate. I didn't do the advanced tutorial, but is there any way to group your troops into teams so you can select the same group later? On PCs this is usually handled with the number keys. Obviously consoles don't have enough buttons to select directly, but you could rotate through each of your groups maybe? Does it have this feature? That was the one thing that bugged me about the demo - as far as I could tell you could select one unit, all units within a circle, or all units.

That was pretty much my impression, too. I don't think it's amazingly innovative or anything, but the game plays pretty well and doesn't feel overwhelming. It makes very smart choices about jumping to units and so forth (eg, when you cycle units, it cycles on a per screen/area basis). The Y-button special attacks lend a weird kind of shooter feel to the game.

The base building concept is surprisingly smart, though: it prevents a lot of game-breaking balance issues, probably prevents new players from getting smashed TOO thoroughly, and minimizes placement problems (in terms of time consumption).

This is the first console RTS that I would consider buying. That's quite an accomplishment.

Unless the unit limit goes up dramatically, I don't even think it's necessary, at least from what I've seen so far. You're never going to be using more than (I would guess) 15-20 units.
