Don't tell the Covenant, but the enigmatic "Halo" protag Master Chief may soon be arriving in theaters, thanks to a deal taking shape at Universal PicturesUniversal Pictures and 20th Century Fox.

Microsoft had gone out with a draft of "Halo" penned by Alex GarlandAlex Garland ("28 Days Later), but its slavish devotion to the software giant's rigid story-and-character criteria met with a lukewarm, underwhelming response from DreamWorks, New Line, Warner Bros. and most other studios that read it.

But U and Fox hung in and believe in the game franchise, which has grossed $600 million. People familiar with the talks say Universal is leading the way on a deal that would divide the pic's cost on a 50/50 basis between Fox and U: The former would take international and the latter would handle domestic distribution.

Financial details were still being wrangled; Microsoft's demands for a rich $10 million upfront payment and 15% of the gross are known to have been whittled down to $5 million. The Redmond, Wash.-based juggernaut's insistence to be in production by January also may be jettisoned and replaced with a promise simply to get the pic into theaters by 2007 at the latest.

cool...i'm glad billy boy is m,aking them stick to the script of the games too, so many good movie/tv/game/comic stories are ruined by too many different adaptations

cgi/custom designed fake vehicles with clever shooting (like star wars) most likely... they are going to have a heck of a time with ghosts and banshees

and i cant wait to see the weapons

It'd be best if they did it Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within style, but you KNOW it's going to be higher budgetted Starship Troopers style.

i don't know about the story of half life or anything, but honestly, the story behind HALO really is a good sci-fi story.

i could see this coming out as a great movie, however I'm worried that it will go the route of other video game movies :(

Where's the 'Doom' trailer?? LOL, the lack of any promotion for this movie (coming to theaters in August) tells you how much that one will suck! Hopefully Halo will be half-way decent since the storyline's a bit richer. Agreed that Half-Life would make a great movie. I'd actually prefer a Tarantino'd version of HL.

Doom has been pushed back to a Halloween release.

Ahh okay. Had no idea.

So who would you pick to play Gordon Freeman? Someone with the right mix of maturity, intelligence, and brawn. Jeff Goldblum? Nicolas Cage? Edward Norton? Kevin Spacey or Russell Crowe (lol they'd never do it!)

I digress. Going back to Halo, I'd bet that 'Master Chief' is one of those roles where Hollywood will cast a black actor even though you'd never see his face. Samuel L. Jackson comes to mind as a good pick, but more likely it will be some relative unknown or newcomer.
