I was thinking to get rid of my older Xbox 360 for a newer one, but I wasnt sure if it was really worth it. A question came to mind: are the new 360 consoles as loud as the old ones?

Not trying to thread crap but are any 360's really that loud? I have an early 360 (within a year of release) and IMO the only thing that's noisy is the DVD drive spinning once in a while. I'm 10-15 feet away though so maybe that's it?

I don't even notice it when I'm sitting at the dash much less playing a game or watching a movie.

I really only notice any noise from the unit when the disc is spinning and there's no audio (like on a game load screen).

Hmm that is true I do only notice it during load screens...I guess I can live with it....damn I was trying to justify buying a Halo 3 edition of the console...but I guess I'll pass :D

I've read a bunch of the Falcon threads since I've been planning to get one.

Noise level apparently varies a lot. Some owners say they don't notice it, others jokingly say it's like a harrier jet. This is true even with Falcon & Zephyr owners.

People say it's the luck of the draw which DVD-ROM drive you get, some fairly quiet (though noticeable on games since it spins as 12X), some really loud. Most people say the fans aren't bad, but not everyone agrees.

So . . . Your Mileage May Vary, even with a Falcon.

Also, the Halo and Go Pro 360's with HDMI are a mix of Zephyr and Falcon units. Search "Falcon" here for threads saying how to ID Falcons.

I got a Falcon, and I think it's too loud, most of the noise is from the DVD-rom. It's not too bad while you're watching videos. The noise level most disappointing part of my xbox experience.

the noise depends on what drive you get. some are quiet. some are not.

I got a new one last week, it is significantly louder. I haven't confirmed what motherboard or dvd drive I have though. It's a pro bundle one.

Oh, it's loud. My computer is relatively silent (made a few case mods/additions). I can hear a pre-HDMI Premium in the other room when the thing is under load. Not sure if it's the fan or the DVD drive, but it's pretty annoying.

My new HDMI one doesnt sound the slightest bit quieter than my old non-hdmi one. Its not vaccuum cleaner loud or anything, but its louder than it should be, and far louder than any other console.

Okay I played Crackdown last night and I paid attention to the noise. When I booted the 360 I could hear it turn on but it was barely audible from the couch. I launched Crackdown and I could hear the DVD drive spin up and a slight bit of noise as it loaded but it was no more audible than the drive in any of my PC's. While playing the game I never heard the 360 but at that point I wasn't focused on listening for it (I forgot). I dunno - maybe I got one of the 'good' ones? FWIW, mine is about 1 1/2 years old.

I had a Zephyr based HDMI one that was horribly loud when playing games. That was one of the reasons that I let it go and replaced it with a PS3. Even during DVD playback there was enough fan/drive noise that it was bothersome during quiet diaglogs of movies.

I have a Falcon and that thing is loud. Even my GF noticed it and she's usually insensitive to things like that.

Yes... they are all loud.

I have two 360s. My first is an 05 launch system (still running great!) and it is obscenely loud. You can easily hear the system running even when just sitting at the dashboard. I don't know if it's just the fans or what, but it has an annoying "whine". Then when you boot a game... it's like a hovercraft entered the room. In all fairness, once the action starts I don't really consciously notice it anymore. But it's like it's still subconciously annoying me because once I turn the system off there is almost a moment of relief from the noise stopping... like I was being annoyed by it but didn't realize it.

My second system I just got for Christmas. It's an Elite with a Falcon board and a Benq drive... the two things I had hoped would result in a much quieter system. My hopes were partially dashed pretty quickly. It's not quite as loud as the older system, but still louder than I had hoped. The only good thing I can say about it is that it's not as "whiney" as the old system, so the noise is less annoying even if the volume isn't much better.

as dave already noted it varies from person to person. there's a slight marginal difference between original and falcon.

If you were to directly compare it to a 40gb ps3 model which I have, then original is very loud and falcon xbox 360 slightly loud. the ps3 is pretty quite when at the dashboard. Its the only tiem I'm near either system to put in the disc.

Once the game starts its all the same.

OP if you need a reason to get the newer xbox, you could also just happen to trip and knock the system over the balcony.

Or push a giant boulder onto it like that car commercial. :D

I wanted to mention that my 360 is tucked in my TV stand. There's enough room around it for ventilation but I have a feeling the sound doesn't get out. The only area that is exposed to the room is the front panel.

Yep...the only way you'd not consider it loud is if the 360 is the first and only console you've ever owned. The original PS2 was about as loud as I can ever stand anything being in my home theater, and the 360 is at least twice as loud.

Its a real pain in the ass living in an apt and trying to play at night without waking the neighbors. I have to turn it up enough over the sound of the 360 drive to hear whats going on, and thats already more than loud enough to wake people up.
