So you're saying they would have sold that many without media saturation and Master Chief Mountain Dew?

Why do you care so much? Sounds like a typical PC geek who cant comprehend that Halo is more of a social game that you play with friends.......you should try to make some.

Arguing about graphics, and additional features on PC games is something only PC gamers care about. The bottom line is Halo players have as much if not more fun than you have on your games so isnt that what matters? Sounds like youre trying to convince yourself that different = bad.

Obviously not 100% what they got, as I stated about the casual gamer. But did most people need a "Halo Mountain Dew" to convince them that they needed to spend $60 on a game? Hell no.

You are putting wayyyyy to much into how much marketing effected the sales. Its not going to go from 1 million to 300 million because of a couple commercials and some pop.

I'll reiterate, this is not in any way the same as music/movie marketing. The cost of the game is too much for people to say "hey that commercial looked good, i am gonna buy the game".

Yes we should. I cannot believe Anandtech's oversight of not having a "Console Gaming" forum dedicated to just that. :D

Because the PC does not have any of those?

I really has nothing to do with console vs PC. It has to do with Halo being overrated.

Because the ending was utter garbage. So that's where the inspiration for Halo 2 came from! :D

So you pick up your computer and take it to a friend's house every time you want to play?
It's more fun to be able to play with 4 people on one big screen TV in the same room..

PLaying online is social but it's not what he is referring to.

Nah, I'll just buy Orange Box for my PC and get a much better single-player game and much, much, much better online game plus a puzzle game thrown in for good measure.

It's not that Halo is popular that makes it bad. It's that it's a completely average game overly inflated with bagillions of dollars in marketing.

As long as the suck does not stop making genuinely good games like HL2, Company of Heroes, and Bioshock it's fine with me.

so because you can buy and enjoy the Orange Box that means you can't enjoy Halo 3 as well?

the hatred towards Halo just baffles me.

i tried to stay out of this thread because I knew it would be just full of the typical hatred comments, but I couldn't resist.

No, I can't enjoy Halo because playing a two-dimensional badass shooting at purple aliens in cookie cutter environments it not fun to me. YMMV :D

I really do not understand the whole "overrated" thing with Halo.

I mean part 2 by FAR is the most played online console FPS game to date (probably most played online console game period), held the top spot on Xbox Live pretty much up until Halo 3 was released, even through all of these Xbox360 games that have been out. That is pretty damn good for a 3 year old game.

Again, how is it overrated when the numbers show just how played this game is?

apparently for no reason other than they probably:
A: don't own/ can't afford a 360 + HDTV, so theres a need to justify why "it sucks"
B: no non e-friends to play it with
C: does this with anything "mainstream". Its only cool if you hate whats popular

Well, personally I don't like split-screen gaming. I was playing Dynasty Warriors Gundam with my friend this past weekend and I just couldn't stand going from me having the full screen to me only having half. I think I'm usually alright with it in racing games, but it still tends to kill how far I can see ahead, which can be a problem sometimes.

Also, I have taken my computer to a friend's house to play games. LAN parties are loads of fun.

To my knowledge, people consider it overrated because it doesn't offer much over the PC's FPS games in terms of gameplay. Some may say that the online experience is a bit better because of XBOX Live though. I kind of imagine it like this:

XBOX_User: ZOMG Halo is like the best ever. I get to run around, shoot shit and it goes boom!

PC_User: Hmm, sounds like 10 years ago....

Well newsflash, but a lot of people who game on Xbox360 don't game on a console, so no one other than PC elitists care how it compares to a PC FPS game.

I'd be inclined to give you the nod in regards to graphics, but overall, halo/xbox live is not overrated. Live integrates everyone on it regardless of what game they are on. Its done better than anything on the PC. In terms of halo online, it is done very well. Matchmaking, party system, stats, abiility to add new maps, custom games + endless settings, the list goes on........overall Halo is the best gaming experience there is. If you want to nitpick and generalize your statement of it being overrated based on graphics or YOUR OPINION of the story, then youre just being ignorant.

wait, did you get your hands on a 3-D copy of half-life? Last time i checked
Halo - Aliens, played on an LCD/TV
HL - Aliens, played on an LCD/CRT

so, how is that different?

The 16 year old could give a crap what the old loser thinks. The old man is just jealous that he cant have that same feeling of driving for the first time again. Oh yeah and the 16 year old has 4 friends in the car while the old man is driving alone while people honk at him.

I think we can all assume which one of these you make yourself sound like.

Halo is the best online FPS for a console, I'd say ever. If someone has a better option I'd like to hear it. That alone is reason enough for it to be so popular.

That being said, I don't care for it too much. Bioshock was more engaging and Guitar Hero is more addicting. Still, 4 player Halo co-op is pretty fun.

I am, however, eagerly awaiting the Orange Box for the 360 next week (I'm a big Half Life nerd).

anyone that thinks the graphics are the same as halo 2 is blind. It's that simple. They aren't the best graphics ever, but FAR better than halo 2. I don't care what any reviews say, I've seen it for myself.

i don't get this argument either....what did you want them to do? Completely overhaul the most popular console FPS ever? Change the engine? Make it into a role-playing game?

Thats such a terrible argument, of course its going to be like 1 & 2, why change something that has proven to be fun and sell?

IMO, (Halo 1 + Halo 2 + new maps + better graphics/HD + new features/items + unlimited online playing) is worth alot more than the generic PC FPS that people stop playing after 3 months when the 'new' game comes out based on a vietnam instead of aliens or vampires.
