Halo 3 , lag?

I noticed this on the ranked servers, why in the hell are they not run on dedicated servers?? Xbox live is something people pay for, its not free...cant they provide a method of running the ranked servers on dedicated machines??

(like warhawk??)

because that's not how it works.

and i'm glad, because in a few years when you can't play warhawk anymore because the servers had to be taken down, I won't have to worry about playing my xbox live games.

and paying for xbox live has nothing to do with halo 3 ranked games.

i believe warhawk also has local servers as in you can start one on your own ps3 and people can join it. probably unranked.

well the way ps2 worked was not like that, so I assumed the PS3 was the same way since it's all the PSN.

Yes. You can set up Lan games with 360s just like you could with the original Xbox.

i haven't personally had a problem (probably due to my University internet) but i have played with lots of people that have...it may become a serious problem in the near future....or it may be something we just have to live with occasionally.

Yeah I just dont get it. Ill get a link later, but there was a game, everyone had a DNF or 0th place because the server just crapped out.
The other night, I was playing some lone wolf, and from the menu, everyones connection was in red for at least 2-3 instances during the map. (only 2 rounds of the 20 some I played) Its not a huge issue, but I don't understand why they cant host the games on dedicated machines...and I mention paying for xbox live, because you pay to play games online...

I was mentioning Warhawk because they have dedicated servers with no lag, but the "matchmaking" aka "server browser" sucks real, real bad...basically the only reason I play much, much less of that game over other titles in my collection.... as far as being afraid of the servers being taken down??? not anytime soon...

Sony has a bunch of official dedicated servers running ranked matches. Any user can also set up a game and host it. In addition, a user can also set up a dedicated ranked server... but, as "dedicated" indicates, the user can't be a player in the match. Warhawk also has local LAN play.

Um...the PS2 was NOT the PSN. That was started with the PS3. You'd figure you'd know these things. 😕 Perhaps you shouldn't try to half-way bash the PS3/PSN (or basically say "Ha, Live is better") when you don't know much about it (or so it seems)?

I guess that just sucks for Live/Halo 3. You'd figure a service like that would have dedicated servers running for the biggest game out there (I'm still doubting that it wouldn't). If I payed for the service, I would expect that MS could offer dedicated servers.

This makes me glad Warhawk has dedicated ranked servers, player created ranked server, LAN/Local games, and just generic games hosted by others.

my whole point is that in order to play ranked games of warhawk, you will haev to ahve these dedicated servers running. so whenever those are no longer in service, you won't be able to play warhawk online ranked.

this past year EA shut down a bunch of servers for their games, and now those games that were playable online w/the PS2 are just no longer playable online at all. it's just not possible because the servers have been shut down.

with xbox live's service and using the optimatch services and having peers hosting, you will be able to play these games forever since it's the peers hosting.

I haven't seen any lag in Halo 3 other than the normal online gaming lag (the same type of lag you see on PS3, Xbox360, and on PC). COD4 Beta on the otherhand had worse netcode than Halo 3, which was very VERy noticeable ingame and tons and tons of threads were made about it during the beta on their website. But that's for another thread ...

it doesn't suck for Halo 3, it didn't suck for Halo 2, and it's never been a problem in the past. if you want to play some lagged Halo, go on xbc or Kai.

i've used PSN extensively and I've used Xbox Live extensively, and I would rather pay $50 for xbox live over the free PSN any day of the week. just because I don't know exactly how the PS2 and PS3 work compared to eachother doesn't mean I don't know anything about PSN, I just assumed the PS2 worked similarly (and it does in the whole dedicated server sense).

I would much rather prefer dedicated servers over p2p hosting. The clear-cut advantage of the host is annoying... I don't even enjoy being host, it's too easy & cheap feeling. Then there is the fact that 50% of console players don't even know what a "host" is. So when they are d'loading porn & everyone is complaining of lag, they are like "haha I'm so good @ this, sucks for you guys!".

Sorry, misleading question.

I meant can I host a game over the internet for my friends to use either through the game itself or with some server software that I can install on a machine.

I like the option of being able to host games without needing to use XBox Live.

live is more for the community aspect in and out of your games, psn is...well not even comparible. PSN is just like having a buddy list, and then you are able to see which games they are playing but you can't join them from the XMB. Also, while you are in game, you cant chat/check on your friends list...which sucks real bad.
Overall, PSN is not comparable to XBL at the moment. And Warhawk, has dedicated and NON-dedicated. And the NOn are optimized so you can only play a certain amount depending on your bandwidth . So even if sony gives it the axe with dedicated servers, you will still be able to play some serious games.

I had that experience with halo, not sure if many others have, but all I was saying is, I am suprised, they do not have dedicated servers running despite the fee we pay for the XBL service.

Your whole point is wrong then. Players can host their own ranked servers. You just can't play in that server when you host it (if it's ranked).

You need to get some facts straight before you say anything.

The only ones who have dedicated servers on live are EA games. Probably not coincidentally, the online experience is worse with their games than with any other game I play.

It's ridiculous that even though we pay for XBL, MS won't to set up dedicated servers for it's most popular online game. It's a major flaw and I'll say that at least Sony got that part right with their online network.
