no i agree

multi is fun but that shouldn't be what a game is based on especially a game that has a pretty cool story imo. bungie had better deliver in single-player and provide a real ending this time

I like the single player and co-op a lot more.

Halo 2 multiplayer was awful.

and Halo was mediocre at best (for multiplayer).

What in this topic prompted people to begin defending PC's? Apparently, the Halo 3 Beta is fun, but no one can play it without some PC elitist belittling them unreasonably. No one was trying to compare Halo's popularity to Starcraft's, and yet there was a need to bring it up because...? The latter does not somehow make the former less fun to play.

I'm not that concerned with the graphics. I didn't expect Gears of War-quality graphics. Halo 3 is much more wide open, and draw distance means a lot more than polygon count in this case. Judging from the write-ups on this, it is tremendously fun. And anyone who questions that design choice need only consider that Halo 2 is still being played by nearly a quarter million people every day on Live. I'm going to be taking off work on the 16th and 17th just to play the Beta, and I'll bet I'm not alone.

that's where the comparison is made valid. halo2 is a few years old, starcraft is a decade old.

I still don't get it. Halo 2 *is* popular and the current fanbase is relatively large if we look beyond just two games. How does the existence of Starcraft undermine Halo 2's value? I mean, let *me* know if any PC games ever sell as much as Super Mario Brothers 3. It doesn't mean PC games don't sell well, have small fanbases, and aren't fun if... well whatever unreasonable point you're trying to prove.

And also, it seems senseless to critique a game you haven't played, only seen. In the same fashion, I could criticize Crysis as being a great-looking game yet terribly mundane in the gameplay department and justify that it's overhyped from just videos?

halo is overrated anyway :Q:Q:Q

Everyone who develops for consoles needs to be introduced to AA. :D
And I agree; Halo is entirely overrated. The campaign sucks, and the online community is even worse. Actually, the online community is pretty terrible in general on Xbox Live.

no you're not alone, I care about it as well. Although I usually get most pumped about the campaign co-op

What exactly do you mean by the "online community"? Such a broad generalization to be trying to make a point, don't you think?

probably that it's filled with a bunch of immature 13 year olds. not to say that that is true, but that's most likely what people would complain about

I figured that's what you would say. Because PC's are FAR from being rid of this problem also. It's just that Live has the joys of having voice chat built-in to all games, therefore it's something that most everyone uses.

Can you tell me that you really have never played a PC game online where someone quit the game early, or where someone cursed up a storm in the text chat box, or ever played Counter-Strike where people thought it was funny to spray porn tags on the walls, or ever played a Battlefield game where players were killing their own teammates constantly just so they could fly the plane, or ever played a WoW game where a high-level player thought it to be funny to just kill low-level players randomly on a PvP server, or.....................well, I could go on and on.

Every online community has it's assholes, bigots, and retards. It's just that Live has the advantage of standardizing voice chat and making it very easily available to everyone. You don't have to listen to anyone you don't want to, making it that much better. Hell, the Live community is no different than the community here at Anandtech, or any other internet community. Most people are good sports and good to play with/converse with, but you still have that population who take advantage of the anonymity of the internet and show their true colors.

i dont think all this comparison and flak bungie is getting is warranted. bungie has done everything it set out to do and more. they never intended to make a stunningly brilliant graphical masterpiece. with halo2 they made a fun game that played well online and (as is standard with halo) had great gameplay. halo3 is no different, the focus has never been on graphics, its on making an enjoyable game, and ive played the beta, it really is awesome and a ton of fun.

I've actually had a ton of fun with the Halo 3 beta. I feel like I have more options for battle and can outsmart rather than outshoot. I can actually play it (unlike Halo 1/2), which is saying something.
I think it is quite a large step forward.
EDIT: Oh, and the online community is much much better in Halo 3 (but that may end after the beta, who knows).
