Completely, completely different situation. Are you saying that if a friend of yours went out and murdered someone.. you wouldn't turn them in? You'd let them walk away from a heinous crime?

(Now, of course, I'm exaggerating the importance of pirating, just as you marginalized it.. but the point is..)

Personally, if I knew of anyone who downloaded Halo 2, I'd tell them to delete it.. and if within a few days they hadn't.. it'd be time for a nice little e-mail to Microsoft.

to all the all you high and mighty losers

why does everyone have such beef w/ the download. I know people who downloaded the game b/c it came out earlier than the real version. They are also BUYING the real version when it comes out, they were forced to wait to long for halo 2, so they wanted to play. get off everyones back, jesus.

Allegedly Halo2 does something REALLY stupid that ruins the game for half the people who have played. *shrug*

Personally, I think you should go die in a fire. But that's just my opinion.

And Microsoft would delete your email. Like they have the time to go after every two-bit copyright violator who downloaded Halo2. Not to mention it would be a major PR disaster (read: RIAA). Microsoft only care about A) The French people who stole and distrubuted the game originally B) Sites with direct downloads to the game.

Actually it was a fake. The only one out new is the French PAL version.

Perhaps they would do so. But personally, I consider it my civic duty to report crimes to the proper authorities. Also, I think MS may very well go after the individual thieves.. they said as much in their press release.

In all, I think the phrase "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" applies here. I'm a software developer, and if anyone knew of people pirating *my* software, I'd like to know about it.

I'd have to agree with dwell. MS isnt gonna go after someone across country because they d/led a game. I think most all developers say they will go after individual ppl to just scare other ppl into not d/ling their stuff. The most MS would do is get their IP,email their ISP and then there ISP email them with a warning or just cut their account.

Either way, taking a fruitless stand against piracy is better than remaining silent about it. If Microsoft chooses not to prosecute, that's their decision.. but at least I wouldn't be helping pirates escape prosecution.
