Halo 2 and widescreen HD TV's

i know there was a patch to fix some HD issues for people who were having problems with Halo 2 in high definition. i actually didn't even play halo 2 in 480p until this past weekend when I purchased my new tv. so i can't compare it BEFORE i patched it with AFTER i patched it wiht my new tv. before i was playing on a 27" wega which doesn't even support 480p.

anyways, i now have a 50" DLP which is both WS and HD. however, i have noticed when playing that the majority of the round display things on screen are still oval. The radar is oval as is the targeting circle you have that shows where your gun is pointed. I actually didn't notice this until someone pointed it out on another forum. then when i went and looked, it actually was oval. its not HORRIBLE, but it is still oval. and if i put the tv in 4:3 mode, everything is squished together. when its in 16:9 mode, everything seems to be fine except the radar and the other targetting circle are oval. it also is kinda wierd playing in 16:9 mode at first, i have to still get used to it.

so has anyone else noticed this problem or found a way to fix it? again, if you havent' noticed its oval, check it out again because i couldn't tell it was oval until someone pointed it out to me. thanks.

Before or after the fix, it should not be oval. Beforehand, part of the hud was simply cut off. Try switching your WS tv to different modes (normal/wide zoom). Also since you are WS now, go to the XBOX dashboard (no DVD inserted) and make sure you're set to use WS. This is likely your problem.

I always forget to switch back and forth between rooms...

OP, you just haven't switched your Xbox to WS. I have a 65" HDTV, and it works just fine. That being said, I still switch to "normal" mode whenever I play with two people as otherwise it puts us side-by-side, which is screwy to play with.

Is it just my poorly calibrated TV(HD/WS), or has anyone else noticed some pretty bad overscan with Halo 2 as well? As in, things on the far edges get cut off, since they put the HUD stuff so close to the edges of the screen.
It doesn't bother me, since it's more out of the way, but I hate when different inputs show off imperfections with my two bit calibration job. 😀
I wish we had a professional ISF tech guy around here!

I know that my roommate's Xbox is set to widescreen and all of the circles in the game are oval except when playing two player multiplayer. It's rather strange.

Probably your TV.

Try a calibration disc, they have test patterns with indicators showing overscan.

Most TV's come from the factory with quite a bit of overscan.

my xbox IS set to WS mode in the dashboard, heh im not THAT dumb 😛. and those of you saying you are playing in WS and didn't have to change anything and say your radars are round, go back and check it. take a pic. i can pretty much guarantee its not round.

i THOUGHT mine was round as well for 3 days, until i read a post on another forum in regards to this issue, then when i plyaed next time i looked at it and noticed that it wasn't exactly round, it was a little more of an oval shape. it wasn't something i noticed though until i was told about it.

I am having the "cut-off" problem as well... Drives me crazy! 56" WS HDTV

Use a friend's xbox live account, or something. I'm not sure, I don't have XBL, but I heard that may work.

ok, someone send me theirs.. 🙂

yea there is no way you can get the live (as of right now) without getting on xbox live and having it update it for you.

also, i just confirmed from doing some more research, that Halo 2 is 480p in WS mode, but however, for some unknown reason, bungie made the game so that the HUD is only 4:3, which is why it is stretched when I am in 16:9 mode. hopefully they will have a patch to fix this as well, but who knows.

Speaking of calibration discs do you know of any free ones out there on the net? I've been searching I don't want to plunk down $50 on the Avia or Digital Video Essentials if I don't have to. Thanks.

There's more to calibration than just the disc itself, you need color filters.

Even an ISO of the Avia disc would be pretty much useless to you unless you want to use your color TV as a B&W.

the game comes with 2-months of XBL free. I used it to get all patches and roster downloads for my other games too. I don't plan on keeping it after the 2 months... I hardly play online... just doesn't excite me as much as online for PC games... and only UT2k4 at that (cause it's much more intense and faster).

AVIA is the only expensive one. Digital Video Essential cost me $13 shipped (with a coupon) when I got it. It can usually be found for under $20.
