Maximum PC had an article where they said that HL2 is programmed very differently from other FPS games - it will scale back the eye candy to match your system. How this is different from other games, I don't know.

Valve claims a TNT 2 will be able to run HL2 at a decent framerate (although who knows what resolution - 320 x 240 ?? :p). HL2 will even make use of DX9 if your video card supports it.

Go for a gig.

Yes, ATI and Valve have something going, not that it should matter much but, i would go with a 9700np and overclock.
What he said. :D

But if you don't want to plunk down the bucks for a new CPU, yours should do fine. At least a 9700np would be in order I think.

there was an article in cgm that if you have a 9600 pro you will run hl2 fine but wont be able to take some of the higher resolutions. I believe a 9700 np will work just fine.

If you want to play with high detail, you will need the fastest PC out there, 3Ghz+, 5900ultra or 9800 pro. Medium detail, a mid ranged system 2.0-2.8Ghz. Low detail, 1.4-2.2Ghz, extra low, 733Mhz-1.2Ghz.

they have stated a benchmarking tool should be available prior to official release, presumably at least the heavy hitting sites will get it in time for a rush job before the game hits shelves/steam.

there is no information anywhere that is remotely reliable with regard to what HL2 will need to run well, which anyway is a highly subjective measure (e.g. some are fine at 30fps low details others demand 85+fps with ALL the eye candy).
