Half of U.S. now in poverty

It is sinking faster than even I thought. It's the Titanic version of Rome.

At what point is the tipping point that will result in full revolution against the 1%? 99%? We are half way there.

Democrats have failed the working class.

Republicans have succeeded in killing off the working class.

Census shows 1 in 2 people are poor or low-income

Squeezed by rising living costs, a record number of Americans — nearly 1 in 2 — have fallen into poverty or are scraping by on earnings that classify them as low income.

The latest census data depict a middle class that's shrinking as unemployment stays high and the government's safety net frays. The new numbers follow years of stagnating wages for the middle class that have hurt millions of workers and families.

"People who never thought they would need food are in need of help," said Mayor Sly James of Kansas City, Mo., who co-chairs a mayors' task force on hunger and homelessness.

"There's no doubt the recession has thrown a lot of people out of work and incomes have fallen"

Many middle-class Americans are dropping below the low-income threshold because of pay cuts, a forced reduction of work hours or a spouse losing a job. Housing and child-care costs are consuming up to half of a family's income.

The struggling Americans include Zenobia Bechtol, 18, in Austin, Texas, who earns minimum wage as a part-time pizza delivery driver. Bechtol and her 7-month-old baby were recently evicted from their apartment after her boyfriend, an electrician, lost his job in the sluggish economy.

Paychecks for low-income families are shrinking. The average earnings for the bottom 20 percent of families have fallen from $16,788 in 1979 to just under $15,000.

In contrast, higher-income brackets had significant wage growth since 1979, with earnings for the top 5 percent of families climbing 64 percent to more than $313,000.

Is half the population starving or is half the population unable to pay their cable bill? Go take a trip to Haiti and then come back and tell me if half the United States lives in poverty.

How dare you say that!! Did you not think about all of the illegal immigrants that are counted in the census and are poor like those in Haiti?

Ladies and gentlemen, this is Chewbacca.

Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it; that does not make sense! Why would a Wookiee, an 8-foot-tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of 2-foot-tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with 50% of Americans being in poverty?

Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with half of the U.S. now in poverty! It does not make sense!

Look at me. I'm an armchair expert on everything, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense?

Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're done reading through the OP's link and you begin deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed forum, it does not make sense!

If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must agree that half of the US is NOT in poverty! There is no class warfare. The rich did not screw this country and it's people over for their own massive gains in profit.

So Haiti is now the bar to which U.S. prosperity should be measured against?

Aim high Willis. Aim high.

Lots of people choose that life. They'd rather live in a rundown apartment or trailer house and find work only when it's needed, draw food stamps and whatever other assistance they can get. To them it's better than waking up in the morning and actually working. I have no sympathy for them. I'm a f@cking felon and I seem to find steady work and oh yeah forgot to mention I dropped out of high school. They have no excuses. Period.

Please someone tell me why I find work but they have to draw food stamps.

If you are indeed poor, everything you need will be provided. Food, shelter, utilities, education, job training, cell phones, big flat screen and cable tv and even a car.

But this is the Food Stamp president, what did you expect? His #1 goal is to get every citizen somehow reliant on government, and that's exactly what he's doing.

Shit this ho was probably fucking around at 17 and now has a 7 month old baby and is not married. Ok just maybe these people are the problem. Fucken let them suffer the stupid need pay the price, just like stupid old people who tell me that they are broke but had one hell of time partying it up and spending all their money not my fucking problem.

and if they get a raise, they would lose their benefits...why take a $200 raise if it would cause you to lose $300 in benefits??

because there are many here who absolutely do NOT believe in personal responsibility for one's actions and decisions....

I didn't think anyone was stupid enough to actually think this. Sort of like how some of you actually believe that people will try to make less money to avoid higher taxes. Nevermind that taxes are only a percentage of your income. Because it makes so much sense to turn down a $4,000 raise if it means you'd have to pay $800 more in taxes.

I know poor people. I came from nothing. Left my dads house with jack squat. He didn't give me one penny. I've seen the exact situation you quoted happen more times than I can count. Don't feel so bad for these people. You obviously came from money and have had no real interaction with the American "poor".
