Half-Life problem...

I decided a few days ago to go back & play through Half-Life again. I have reached a point where the only thing I can figure to do is go up an elevator. There's a sign across from it that says Surface Access, & the elevator goes up.

However...

I can get in the elevator, & start up, but halfway up it reaches a load point. It loads, but then the elevator freezes. The sound loops, & I am unable to move. My health & power drain slowly down to 0 (one by one, not in jumps), & I am able to look around & fire my weapon. It's almost as if I'm dragging against the wall, except normally that wouldn't actually stop the elevator. I have restarted Half-Life, backed up to a previous save & played to the elevator again, all to no avail.

Anybody have any suggestions? I haven't tried rebooting yet, & though I suppose I could I don't think that's the problem. My system has been up & running for about 36 hours, I rebooted it last when I installed my new power supply.

Running Windows XP Pro, 512 MB RAM, dual 1800+'s, & a GF3 Ti200. Half-Life is patched to the latest version. I remember having similar problems when I first played through it, but exiting & re-entering the game always solved the problem.

Anybody have any suggestions?

THAT's your problem. Send your rig over to me and I'll get it fixed up in a jiffy.

Is it that difficult to reboot?

I'd try it first.

Weren't there some problems reported with the latest HL/CS patch?

I am still using Win98SE to play all my games and Win2K and XP for everything else. I just got tired of the unresolved gaming problems and glitches in the newer O/Ses.

I dont recall exactly where you are in the game because it is sooooo big. It sounds like that is the thing to do since it is loading the next level. It also sounds like you are being drained by something in the game by the way you describe it. Have you tried to use a cheat to get past that point?

Are you running any cheats? you may have to use noclip or god mode to get through. I get similar probs with half-life once in a while, but mine allways seems to be that I can't get out of an elevator once it gets to the top. I can spin around and shoot, but can't move forward. Have you tried moving or jumping while going up the elevator? What map exactly are you on(eg: c2a5, c1a0, etc.), I can see if I can reproduce the error or find a way around..

No, it's not. :p I'll go ahead & do it & report back. Previously though I've played many hours of Unreal & MOHAA over the course of 1-2 weeks without rebooting. My system has been rebooted maybe 10 times in the last two months, all due to hardware/OS changes.

I would think it was something in the game, but looking around I see nothing at all. Plus it drains so slowly, it's literally one point at a time. Plus the looping sound seems odd. After you're dead, though, the elevator will continue to the top. I'll try to take a screen shot to show you.

It sounds like you are getting electrocuted by standing on something that is shorted out. I seem to remember a similar event whenI played it last.

Thanks for reminding me. I may now play it again on my newer vid card.:)

Do you have the updates to the game engine that improve the graphics a bit? I know HL's Blue Shift updated them.

EDIT: When you get back, ViperGTS, check WHERE you are in the game from the save menu. Tripleshot may be right (I'll consult the walkthrough for you).

I've had that problem before with Half-Life. Usually crouching or jumping while the elevator goes up will solve that little annoyance.

Sounds like Freeman is stuck in something, or trapped by something. If you have ever created levels with worldcraft you would understand, it is a place you can get into, but not out of. Like falling in a developers crack in the world, there are quite a few in Half Life that I have come across. Try entering the elevator, and standing or crouching in different areas.

I would agree, however there is no damage indicator (ie now flashing red showing I'm taking hits - It simply counts down.).

Rebooting & crouching while going up did not solve the problem, how do I tell exactly what map I'm on?

[EDIT]Actually, sometimes it does show the damage indicator... Also, it may not be looping sound I'm hearing it may be a helicopter above me... I don't remember if the helo is there at this point though, it's been too long since I've played it.[/EDIT]

Had the same thing happen the first time I had HL installed. Jumping will get you through it (if not the first time, then the second)

Jumping after I was frozen did not help (already tried that), but jumping up & down the entire trip up the elevator got me through.

:)

Thanks for the help, looks like it's just a bug in the game.

well, that particular spot is where it switches chapters. Been so long since i played the game, can't remember the name of the next one. Something like "we have a problem". That loop quite possibly be the hellicopter that is dropping troops and bombing the crap out of the upside. Is this right after you see the first marine and the scientist gets wasted saying "oh, I am so glad you are here" while he is running towards him? Then that is a chapter change spot. I would repatch and figure out.

Kinda on a side, blurry memory, note.....I also believe thats the point where the demo of the game ended.

Sorry, wish i could be of better assistance.

The problems mentioned here in Half-life and many of it's single-player add-ons are very common in elevators and for this reason whenever I'm in an elevator I always move around back and forth until I come to a stop. If it's an open elevator I try to jump off before it reaches a stop. A minor inconvenience in the best game ever !
