Half-Life Launcher Error

When I'm playing Counter-Strike, once in a while a Microsoft error message will come up saying the "Half-Life launcher had an error and must be closed."

(It's the new type of error message you get in XP when you can send a report)

Is anyone else having this problem and does anyone know how to fix it??

Hardware config? Latest game patch? Through Steam? etc

AMD 2000+
256DDR Ram
G4 MX440 64ddr MB

Using Windows XP Professional - done every update..
game patches everything is updated..
game configs..800x600 using OpenGL

and yes..thru steam..its required..=/

Any other games experiencing problems? If not, a Re-install of Half Life and all updates would seem a start.

i even re-formatted my computer..from windows xp to windows 2000..still doesn't work..

Well, that is odd if you re-installed everything and it still happens.

Probably something to do with steam, that is a balky program and a resource hog.

BTW, steam is not required to play cs. There are still thousands of cs 1.5 servers out there. (one of which I run).

I don't plan to go to steam until they completely shut down the won servers which are necesary for public cs 1.5 servers to run.

In my opinion, which I've stated many times on this forum, steam is a bloated, balky program which was probably mainly developed in order to create a vehicle by which valve will ultimately be able to charge a fee to play their games over the internet.

Sorry I can't offer a solution (other than possibly go back to 1.5), but here's a bump for ya.

i have athlon 2000, 512mb ddr266, radeon 9500pro, wd 80gb se, winxp prof., audigy es.
i have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM. cs1.6.
v1.5 used to be fine. no other game gives me probs. ive tried cats 3.9, 3.10, now on 4.1.

yah..alot of people has this problem..im suspecting that it has sumthing to do with video drivers..
because when i play other OpenGL based games, i freeze also..but i don't get the windows error..it just simply freezes..
not sure wuts going on..and i think Valve is working on this problem now..cause alfred reynolds (a valve person) emailed me about it and asked for some information about the problem..
