Half-life...does it ever end?

A friend of mine bought this game for me for X-mas a year and a half ago. I finally decided to load it up and play it and I must say that now I understand why it was voted game of the year(s).
However, just when I thought I was getting close to the end, of the game, I am seemingly no closer. I have now reached the Lambda Core, started both core cooling pumps, opened the valves to flood the core, and am now trying to work my way via the teleporters to....?

Any how, it's a great game, but give me a hint. Am I almost there?
There of course meaning the end of the game.

Ha, that's funny - I'm playing Half-Life too and I'm also at Lambda Core and can't figure out how the heck to get out of there! Been playing off and on (mostly off) for the last 2 and 1/2 years! I also loaded up the original Unreal and have been working my way through that, too.

You have the entire "Xen" experience to get through. To be honest, most people hated the Xen levels. Maybe you won't. Good luck :)

Thanks to the purchase of Blue Shift, I've played and finished Blue Shift, played and finished Op For, and am about to encounter the Black Ops (2nd time) in Half-Life.

I'm playing all these on Hard, also. Considering I know what to expect already (even on Hard) the game isn't that all difficult.

I installed the HD pack w/c I guess is worth the price of admission. I must admit that having an M4A1 assault rifle using 9mm rounds is pretty pathetic.

I might be mistaken but I don't think you even got to the railways yet! That's a game in itself!

Not to dissapoint....but for those you thinking of getting Blue Shift, it is really short and not really that good. I finished it in about 2 1/2 hours. :(

I liked the game up until the point where the scientist was hanging for dear life in one of the elevator shafts. My good god I shot him at least 100 times and he kept spraying blood and whining, but held on like a true trooper. Then I got close to him and he finally let go. Bleh. -I- should dictate when that fool dies, not some game script.

Actually, the railways were earlier in the game. I'm just into the part where (I guess) I have to try and teleport my sorry ass from level to level of the Core to reach different control/re-supply area's and to do what, I know not. (of course kill anything and everything that tries to slaughter me on the way).
HansXP, umm..Xen? WTF, I'm not getting anything done around the house between playing this and CS, and my eyes hurt, and I have to go thru Xen? AAAkk!!! oh well...I'll just hire out the housework.

Oh man, that part and the part after that one drove me nuts.

Here's some help from an IGN guide...

<< Port 1 leads to a small area with Headcrabs and radioactive waste. You can collect Grenades here, but unless you're especially keen on Grenades, avoid it. Port 2 teleports you up the next set of moving platforms, so you can enter ports 4 through 6. Three leads to a small room stocked with Batteries, Satchel Charges, and other great stuff. Highly recommended! Four teleports you to the top set of moving platforms, so you can access ports 7 through 9. Five sends you to a room with three Scientists. You can collect lots of gear if you do a little exploration; this, too, is recommended. Six leads to a damaging fall. Avoid it. Port 7 sends you to the next phase of this level, so take this Port only when you're ready to move along. Port 8 takes you to a small room overlooking the reactor you recently flooded. A couple of Vortigaunts will harass you, but an HEV Station and some ammo for your Tau Cannon might make this worth the trip. Port 9 kills you. >>

PliotronX, since I don't like cheats, I won't look at your post, but will only peak at it with one eye squinted. :Q

Gone through Lambda Core and made it to Xen. Man, I hate this place. Not b/c it's Xen but b/c it's so unrealistic. Took out Gonarch (it wasn't as scary as the first time I played it 3 years ago). I always favored playing against the Marines in Surface Tension.

***Possible Spoilers***

The end boss is such a push-over. Last time I played the game 8 months ago. I took it out without it killing me or using its powers to teleport me to another part of the map. I pretty much stayed in the same room with it and took it out with one rocket on the first pass.

My 2 cents:

I just finished Blue Shift yesterday and I liked it. It was real short, shorter than Opposing Force, which I thought was short too. Still, I liked it. It had some pretty cool levels and a cool story. I liked the puzzles the most. Not nearly enough monsters though and no "boss" at the end either. That was kinda disappointing. I want to play it back through again on hard skill to see what it's like. If it adds more monsters, that'd be good.

As for Xen in the original, I though it was cool. It was a little too long but it was neccessary for the story and it fit in. Don't get me wrong, I think it could've been better.

I think the problem was that the creators made the earth part of the game so believable that the Xen part didn't seems as believable in comparison. I think they would have been better off making Xen a planet, similar to the forest in Heavy Metal FAKK2. A concept easier to grasp. The floating platform idea was just a little too hard to accept as reality. Add in the endless monotonous jumping puzzles, the lighter gravity, the skewed reality as far as "healing ponds" and other strange things, and I think most people just ended up confused, lost, and bored rather than having fun.

I think Opposing Force handled the Xen world idea better, as well as Blue Shift. In fact, in Blue Shift towards the end you get a little more history about what Xen is, or where Xen is.

Anyone who is bored with Half-Life should try the Counter Life mod. Playing HL with the CS weapons is hellah fun.

Well, I finished HL a couple of hours ago (again for the umphteenth time).

I at least played it on system without worrying about gameplay and framerate. Getting to chat with the Administrator is worth the play-through. Kinda reminds me of the Smoking Man from X-Files.

All Half-Life games with exception to CS have been uninstalled and it's now back to CS.
