Half-Life 3 thread.....again!

It's nothing new at all. Everyone already knows Valve is working on Half Life 3. What everyone wants to know is when it will actually be finished.

I'm sure they'll release it eventually. But to be honest, I'd rather have them take their time on it and it come out very solid and polished than to be rushed. We've all seen what rushing games has done for the most part lol.

People have been begging for years, I don't think Valve will leave everyone hanging forever.

I think it is the announcement of Halflife 2 4/5. Maybe Halflife 4. Perhaps 'Halflife: Next Generation'. All I know is that the number 3 will not be involved.

Half-Life 2 came out almost a decade ago and you're worried they're "rushing" HL3? Are you kidding me? HL3 is the new DNF. Won't believe anything until it's official, and even then I'm not expecting great things.

it's not even close to the new DNF because we don't know how long it's been in development and zero information has been released. the only thing we know is that valve admitted to working on a new engine, which everyone assumes has something to do with half life 3. valve is in clearly no hurry to release another half life game, and I hope this in effort to release an amazing and "revolutionary" game in the age of cod and other generic on rails fps shooters.

A new revamped graphics engine demonstrating one of the better sci-fi shooters this century has had, could make quite a bit of media head lines.

You're right its not close to the new DNF, that game actually came out.

well, we do know when episode 2 came out and episode 3 was under development at that time. The assumption is they just changed episode 3 into HL3. So at minimum, episode 2 came out about 6 years ago, so they have been working that long. Very likely longer since to release episodes they were working on the 3rd long before the 2nd came out.

They're (Valve) probably working on it for the upcoming PS4 and/or next XBOX (surely both, and of course for the PC which will probably be a port). I'm sure that whatever happens with HL3 it won't be a "PC exclusive" that's about guaranteed (obviously bigger market, more money with consoles added in the basket), and it won't be released for the current generation consoles either. So... yeah I'm sure HL3 will eventually come out and I do have this feeling that they are currently working on it, although of course I might be wrong and the only thing Valve has for the future is more hats for TF2 and maybe L4D3 (or Portal 3).

Either you know nothing about Valve or really misjudge them. If you look even as recent the Orange Box you'd see that they treat PC gamer's far better.

edit: Orange Box was 2007? Dear Lord...
Nonetheless, I think they care more about PC gamers than console and wouldn't expect them to port from consoles to PC.

Would be no better time to release HL3 than with the release of the new consoles. They may have been waiting on this to not compromise the game to make it run on the ancient 360 and PS3.

I've been reading stuff around the web alluding to this. There is a rumour going around about a major unreleased game being in a bundle with AMD video cards and some hints that it could be Half Life 3.

Cautiously optimistic :ninja:

I think the reason HL3 is viewed so negatively in terms of their development time is that Valve stated, instead of making a HL 3, they were going to focus on episodic content to shorten development time and give gamers smaller, shorter releases to enjoy. This wasn't the case, and it took them just as long to release the episodes. If they had just said "HL3 will be released when we are ready" and didn't try and do the episodes, which took 2 years for the first btw, gamers wouldn't be as jaded about HL3.

Ahh. It's been a while since we've had a good HL3 speculation thread.

Gabe is the world's fattest cock tease.

Gabe is not a dumb guy, that's for sure. He's smarter than most game developer chairmen. He's 100% of aware of the gigantic, ravenous demand for a new Half Life game; someone, somewhere deep inside Valve, has gotta be working on HL3 in one form or another. I can't imagine otherwise.

Everytime someone inquires him, he always replies with a straight face "We have no news regarding the Half Life series at this time." I'm seriously impressed with how mum he is about it. Makes me wonder what kinds of things are going through his head.

He did say that Valve was working on a new engine relatively recently (last year I believe), and they will be releasing a new game to debut with it. Which fuels the speculation even more.

Erm, ok...

I don't see any link between a game being a port and treating one group over another in a "better" way. I am simply saying it would most likely be a port, that in itself doesn't mean Valve will suddenly mistreat the PC version of HL3 nor its respective community. I guess that saying that a game is going to be "a port" nowadays is considered as some sort of insult, which would explain your reaction. I was merely referring to the technical aspect (being a port, that's it).

Being a "console port" is usually defined by the developer disregarding the PC community and developing solely for the console, and later on porting that game to the PC community with no respect to what the PC has to offer, i.e. better graphic abilities, control issues, and so on. It usually is an insult to the PC community, and the ability to see if something is a console port or not is usually pretty easy.

With that said, I don't see Gabe doing this; my reference to the Orange Box was to bring to light how each of those games were developed for the PC first and then offered on consoles (TF2 being the greatest example of Gabe caring for the PC version over console).

I would absolutely LOVE a team fortress 3 based on a new engine. Thats really what would get me excited. HL3 would be great of course, but TF3 would be too cool to be real. Maybe when my kids are my age something like that will happen.
On another note, they may be talking about that new VR thing, the Oculus Rift. Team Frotress 2 is supported to play with it.
