newegg has two selections of half-life 2, one for 29.99 and one for 32.50
see
whats the difference in the two, are they the same as you get from the store, reading reviews it says it comes with cs:s, is that both of them or just one, and some reviews say it doesnt have all the bells and whistles, what does it mean, why is it so much cheaper than at the store

I'm pretty sure one is retail and one is an import.

Model #: HALF LIFE 2 IMPORT 29.99

Model #: 719546192826 32.50

Ha! No the name of it is Source. Not that it has the source code. And yes both come with CS:S. The cheaper is just imported into the states.

You can't play regular counter strike. Only counter strike source. But yes yo should be able to download thier mod making tools via steam.

Regular counter stike that was made like 10 years ago... does NOT come when you purchase HL2

The new version named Counter Strike:Source with updated graphics, physics, maps, etc DOES come with it.

Why is CS:S packaged with Half Life 2? Was it ever available on its own? Or is it just a good will gesture?

Just buy a Steam coupon in a FS/FT forum. I caught HL2 in there for $17 and I'm sure you can find it for cheaper.

i got this cheaper import from newegg, nothing wrong with it and comes with all bells and whistles. No difference (at all) to the US versions except that it has a sticker "asia pacific version" or something on the box because it is an import :) Also no diff to HL2 you buy for $49 or so elsewhere. Same game, same bundle.

i also got the import version from newegg. it comes with HL2 and CS:S and works just fine. i think the only difference between the import version and the other one is the import doesnt come with the manual.

The domestic one doesn't come with a manual, either, I didn't think.

I can't believe this game is so friggin' cheap already. Wasn't HL1 still costing $40 just two years ago?

Not a whole lot of HL2 talk here these days, is there?

I would suggest that if you are having difficulties you might want to try the steampowered forumns and the support sections.

You have to connect to the internet at least once so you can create the Steam account and so you can acquire the game content that is not on the CDs.

It's been awhile so I forget exactly how it all goes. When you say you try to make a Steam account are you talking about going through the business of entering your CD key and what-not? Have you done that yet? Once you do all that you need to connect and ensure that whatever you want to play is 100% completely downloaded.

Can you play offline? Sure. HL2 anyway. I don't know anything about CS:S.

A couple of months ago a Steam update took away the ability for many if not all of us to play offline. A forumn poster figured out that what gives it back is installing or enabling a Microsoft Loopback Adapter. Enable the adapter, click HL2, Start in offline mode comes up, disable adapter, click Start in offline mode and you're off. A bit of a pain but at least it works.

If you can't get it all to work, be sure to go over to the steampowered forumns and whine about how Valve stole your money and they don't care about you and what-not.
