Half-Life 2 Visuals Dissappointing *Updated with pics*

Remember the HL2 HDR demo Valve released about a year ago showing all the visual features of the game? Here's a link, in this video, you can see incredible shader effects on the alien's skin, on the roof tops (red brick) and the metal plates, there's also the special sunlight effect through the holes in the ceiling, after seeing this movie a year ago I thought Half-Life 2's visuals are simply unbelievable, but after actually playing the game, I was hugely disappointed by finding out that NONE of the effects I mentioned above are actually available in the game, some of them are, but are hardly visible, they were reduced for some reason.
I went to the same place in the game, there's no alien of course, but first, the light holes in the ceiling look just like that, light holes with no special glare or any HDR effect around them, the red brick roof looks pale, with no shaders at all applied to it. The Metal plates look WAY less attractive, it looks like they've reduced the shader quality on them or something.
In a distant level in the desert I found that alien, I examined its body closely, and it looked pale too, all those fancy shaders in the Demo were gone! I can't find a logical reason for that, the alien looked amazing in that demo, why would they strip it out of those shaders? To improve performance? They should've atleast let US control this in the video options. I really feel cheated after seeing the actual game's graphics and seeing how the DX9.0 effects were severely reduced in the game compared to its previous demo.
I'll post some screenshots later from the game to give you a better picture of the case, though I think the demo should be enough to let you know what I am talking about.
What do you say about that? Am I missing something here? Is my card not running the game at its full quality? (running 1152x864 2xAA/16xAF MAX DETAILS) Or is it just Valve trying to let their game run fast on most systems by sacrificing some major IQ features instead of giving us control over that?

edit: I don't think HL2's graphics are bad at all, the water effects are amazing, and some shader effects are great, I just hate it how certain effects were cancelled/reduced.

UPDATE: These are the screenshots I took from the game from the exact same location in that demo:
Ceiling Holes:

Roof Top and Metal Plates:

I even turned on the flash-light to see if it adds any special effects to the scene, unfortunately, it didn't.
As you can see, the difference is like night and day between that demo and the actual game. Comments?

Now that you mention it, I think you got a point here.
I don't know, I haven't even checked the console commands of the game, but I believe that you're right. I do remember that video in which shader and HDR effects were more intensive in it.
Maybe those effects severely cost in perf like in Far cry patch?
Maybe they just wanted ATI to be in the performance lead and they show that bringing more HDR effects to the game was making Nvidia a close performer? After all they paid them a lot of money to optimize the game for them.
I could be wrong of course and these are pure speculations. Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to blame ATI and make a silly point out of this, I just mention it as a possibility.Who knows?

I tried ALL the console commands I found at tweakguide's HL2 guide, and none of them improves shaders' quality. But what you said about the possibility of HDR bringing nVidia close to ATI in performance is interesting, but who knows?

BTW when playing HL2DM I thought I saw HDR? Or were my eyes just deceiving me, being tired from work and all.
Am referring to the level which takes place in the prison.

this guy did it

Interesting. Is this from a forum or something? Can you link us to it?
Otherwise if it's just a photo, Photoshop could have easily done the job....

It's not Photoshopped, nor did that guy turn up the glossiness, it's just the game, see here, here and here, I took these screenshots, the aliens in some very rare occasions look reflective and full of shaders, in some other places they look normal. This is how the game was made, and I can't find a reason for that.

No, those are logical assumptions which very well may be true.

I have heard something about a PS3.0 patch for HL2. Only time will tell. Since the Source engine will be the basis for countless games, it only makes sense for them to support HDR and PS3.0. They'll probably wait until R500 is released before they bring it out.

... I was hugely disappointed ...

You have no right to bitch (or be "dissappointed") when you're using a bootleg copy of the game (the red power meter gives you away). May your your armpits be infested by the fleas of a thousand camels!

haha PWNED funny how babies who get things free complain,,, HDR version of HL2 isnt out yet iether so update your WAREZ copy when it comes out mine will update automaticly and work flawless

I don't know, I think the HL2 graphics are pretty good. I like Far Cry or Doom3 graphics better, but HL2 is up there.

Maybe someone with a 6800 card can try enabling HDR to see if it makes any changes. I am sure someone can figure out what command will enable it in the game.

Yes, I've noticed that too. Everything that they've shown us was BS and hype creating clips. The game looked so much better than it actually was, but no one notices. Valve is retarded and should be punched in the face many times over. Freakin Gabe bitchin all the time and thank the community... - F him and his stupid retarded game that was badly coded. It took Valve 6 years to poop.

I believe you can turn up the glossiness.
I think it looks like that already. From what I experienced in the game.

At least Valve made a decent playing game with good gfx.

The turkeys at id haven't got a clue how to make a modern decent-playing game. Doom iii is a stupid, boring and banal game with ZERO replay value (except for the gfx). Doom iii is Carmack's Daikatana. 😛

And don't expect Shader 3 from ATI (and likely a workable HL2 patch) until r520 this Summer. 😛

Instead of the revolutionary game with revolutionary graphics everyone was expecting and Valve said they would deliver. id didn't hit it out of the park on the gameplay front for sure, but the D3 engine easily humiliates Source in the visuals department(for that matter, outside of the water shader Crytek's engine is also considerably more impressive visually).

yeah hl2 HDR in that demo we got shown ages ago looked excellent better than the farcry one, but overall HL2 still owns in terms of pure graphics goodness

I honestly don't know how people say HL2's graphics are all that great. They're far from bad, but they lack character. Doom 3 has dark and indsustrial look, and Far Cry has the bright vibrant look, but HL2 just looks normal (and no I don't mean it looks more real than the others). I think what games need now, and would require probably less powerful systems to run them, would be graphics with more character than just trying to look real (Which all too often causes it to look more fake than real).

Yeah, I kept hearing how revolutionary everything about HL2 would be and how it'd change the face of gaming and yada yada yada. Its just a more polished version of the first game.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I am not really interested at all by the HL world. I can't relate to the main character much at all, the Combine look fairly stupid (they look like one of the loser reject characters from Mortal Kombat, I think his name was Kabal or something). Head crabs and the other enemies that I guess are supposed to be scary are anything but.

The last thing that I am very disappointed with is the highly touted physics. They get in the way more than anything to me, and wow, talk about overexaggerated. Everythign flies around like a bouncy ball if you just touch it. Last time I checked walking into a large metal barrel didn't cause it to fly 20 ft and bounce around like I had just shot it with a rocket.

If you enjoy(ed) the game then great, I'm glad you did. I apologize for the semi-rant, but all the people claiming HL2 was going to be the best game ever and that Halo 2 is "gay" and Doom 3 suddenly went from being cool to being crap have made me kinda bitter.

Half-life 2 looks a little 2d to me for some reason but I love that gravity gun and all you can do with it. FarCry is still the best game of the year IMO. I've played though 4x and doubt I'll comeback for a 2nd on Doom III or HL2.

Hehe ya. People like to say Doom III can be summed up with one adjective: DARK. Well, HL2 can be summed up too: Yellow

PrayForDeath, you are sleeze. Whether or not you or anyone else likes it, the folks @ Valve put a lot of work into this game and consumers like myself & everyone else here who bought it put our own work into buying this game. I'm not saying I've never DLed stuff, but I have enough decency to respect the work of those who have earned it. Get a job and buy the fvcking game, it'll be the best $40-$80 you've ever spent. :disgust:

i know i said the gfx were good overall but on second thoughts there are a few things that jus make u think, i could of done better. some textures are abit blocky and low rent, but only if u look

thw water looks great, but farcrys is just as good, and i noticed one thing if u put reflect world then water doesnt refelect big objects like boats, and piers which looks very odd indeed...im not so fussed that grass and foliage doesnt get reflected in this mode, but leaving out an big object like a boat or pier is abit :s
so i accept the 10fps ish drop in speed so the water doesnt jus look like its a mirror reflecting the sky

and i said this before.......heat haze effect, doom 3 has it in places, and all i saw in HL2 that used heat haze effect was a burst gas main...and even then there was no fire, the effect was jus to show u clear gas coming out a hole

not once did i see heat haze on the small campfires or burning barrells and i would sure like to see heat haze coming off the cross bow that fires them heated metal rods.

Calling him a sleeze but you do the same sh1t? That's worse. A hypocrital sleeze😀

Did God die and left you in charge of whos "earned it" whether you can DL it or not? LOL BS, they set a price, pay it or don't pay it, your interpretation of "earned" gots nothing to do with it. What makes you entiled to the fruits of someones labor for free? Oh if it meets your standards after DLing it then you might pay? Gimme a break.
