Why the hell do they keep releasing f'ing huge games like this on FIVE CDS!?!?! People with computers capable of playing HL2 at anywhere near an acceptable level will most likely have at least a DVD-ROM drive.

production costs
On top of MustISO's post, just think-
Five CDs
One DVD

I don't think that a single DVD will cost more than five CDs, let alone the additional packaging needed by five CDs.

Not everyone has a DVD drive. I've got an AXP3200-9600pro system without DVD. My friend has P4 3.2Ghz-9800 system without DVD. My other friend has A64 3000-9600xt without DVD. They don't want to block sales to any potential buyers, so they release it on the most compatible medium (CD) as well as the most convenient one (DVD).

They could have made it optional. They know that total HL nuts will pay the stupid amount of money for it on DVD. I personally am pissed, because I don't need 5 cds dicking around my desk, and I sure am not spending $90. I also don't want to have to make my own DVD for a game, because that's lamo.

Just get it through Steam. I was hesistant, but it really was the right way to go. Yes, you have to make your own DVD, but is it really that hard? I don't think so. Besides, you can always just back up your files onto another hard disk. That's faster and easier, anyway.

If you can pay for a $50 game that requires a $150 videocard, you can surely afford a $25 DVD drive.

Wow, requiring that someone activate the game online before they can play it offline - that's a crappy thing to do to somebody.:| So they've basically put the Steam version on some CD's, put it in a box, and are charging $5 more for it.

In some cases it's a question of whether one wants to buy a DVD drive. Anyone can afford one, but few people have to play a game so badly that they will buy another drive just to play that game.
