Half-Life 2 Source Code Leaked

So what does this mean? I looked around the HL2 Forum and people were saying they basically know every part of the game, including some CS and TFC2 info. Is that it? Is it really that big of a deal?

The problem is that it is will be EXTREMELY easy to make cheats and hacks for HL2. Not good... especially for online multiplayer games.

Pffft, will not make too much difference in some ways. Any HL1 players out there will know that Valve have changed the net code and other things so much during HL1's lifespan that HL2 will be heavily modified in its lifetime. To put it bluntly, the Half-Life 1 that was released 5 years ago looks different, works differently, and plays differently to how it does now as far as online gaming goes.

The big deal as far as I see it in terms of gameplay is cheats, but new netcode patches and small changes to the game engine will fix this. In terms of money, it may cost Valve a bit, especially if some game company decides to re-engineer the engine so that it's different, but ultimately they haven't made many changes in terms of function.

I can see this being pushed as an excuse for its late release soon enough, but I don't see why the leaking of the source code would slow them down...... it's not something they really can / have to react to. I'd rather see the game out the door than see it held back so that they change something that works for no reason at all.

Does anyone else think the release date is going to slip again? 🙁

I am one of the believers (since this news came out) that this is the reasons the Sep 30th date was delayed. In his post in that forum he said that they started seeing problems early Sep and the 19th is when the directory was copied. Usually when they had delayed the release they gave a good amout a time before the acctual date. This time however it was the last min.

even if it has been leaked what can anyone do with it? If they use it they get big time sued

I think the idea is the implications for Steam and the Havok game engine. Folks with alterior motives aren't concerened so much with the legal implications of their actions, potential game developers betting the ranch on said game engine might be concerned(very), as would someone paying a monthly fee to play on Steam.

this dosent look good.

btw if the source code is out cant some1 compile it and "release" the game?!

Theyd have to make a TON of textures, etc before they were able to release much of a game. Even then..the second they released it Valve would be ALL OVER their ass.

LOL- I think Gabe is learning what Carmack already learned about the ATI staff......

If you mean the Doom3 Alpha leak, that at least was a proper leak. I was unaware that it was attributed to ATI (you got a news article on that? Would make interesting reading).
In this case however, it is a leak from getting hacked. Considering ATI have access to the source and game no doubt anyway, why would they hack their way into Valve to leak the code?

I still think Carmack did it 😛 cos he has the skills. Probably just checking out how HL2 compares to Doom3 and has no real interest in using it. That or nvidia in the hope that someone will find a bit of code which slows the game down on NV cards 😛 <------- And if you believe that, be careful, the G-Man is out to get you.

I don't think the HL2 source code leak is their biggest worry. The company was violated over a period of nearly a month. Gabe was specifically targeted by the hack. Now, I would think that this was the biggest problem, since it would bring about the largest legal penalty. The code probably will make its way into the underground, but will likely be outdated very soon as another poster suggested, especially as compatibility issues are addressed. The code leak is not the pertinent issue. Its that some f*&khead(s) 1)thought they were doing the community a favor 2) retliated against Valve for any variety of issues possibily including the Nvida issue, 3)did it just to do it. Now I think that if it were done for that sake alone, big deal. If it were done with malicious intent. these people should be burned at the stake. The possibility that they were deliberately attacking an individual and not the corporation per se really irks me.

Even though the code has changed it will probably still be hacked. An example would be Diablo 2. Chars stored on server so no hacking right? NOT. Its been hacked to hell. And these are top of the line servers hosted by AT&T. Other people running dedicated servers on their own machines will be much easily subjected to hacks. Valve will have to patch many things like before. This probably would have happend anyways though without the leak though. When there is a will there is a way
