we all knew geforce was going to come out on top for doom 3, and it's almost certain that ati will come out on top for half life 2. my question is how well will a base 6800 (128mb) geforce hold up with half life 2? say at fairly high settings of 1280x1024 without aa and af...

any thoughts? how much better would an x800 be?

The HL2 engine is greatly optimized for the features that ATI cards offer. For HL2, the x800 would be better than the 6800, although the 6800 would put up a good fight. It's mostly due to the fact that Direct3d is one of ATI's strong points and one of nVidia's weaker points. Conversely, OpenGL is strong for nVidia and weak for ATI (note the large scale differences in quality of Doom 3). The HL2 engine runs totally off of Direct3d technology.

I'm just hoping it will be enough to run it on max detail 1024x768 w/ 4xAA/8xAF.

I'm on an AthXP 3200+ with 512 PC3200 and a 6800NU (16x6) and on CS:Source I'm getting an average of 60 FPS in 10x7 w/ 4xAA/16xAFF and vSync on (All other details highest they can go). A lot of the frame drops have to deal with the server latency as well. I don't think you'll have a big problem running it well.

dont agree that HL2 will run better on a x800

check some benchmark/review with CS:Source, 6800 is a bit hard.

but HEY, we are talking 2-3 fps( 6800 at 66,x800 at 63...) here.So honestly, none of these card will be a bad or will have have an advantage compare to his competitior.

It will run, dont worry.

yeah in cs:s nvidias techniques like HSR engine (hidden surface removal) and there way of dealin with massive overdraw (aquamark 3 being usefull again) give them a signifcant lead some times

JUst to confirm. CS:Source gives me 98fps at 1920 x 1200 with a 6800GT. nVidia cards I believe will be fine... :)

Guys, why so much drama over Half Life 2? You know any card over a 9800 Pro will be able to run it flawlessly, so why worry? Just buy the game, and enjoy how cool it is, not your FPS ;) (And yes, a 6800 will be able to run it just fine, i'm sure of that)
