Kept crashing on me when trying to load the game, nvdia's 66.93 got it up and running though.
First experiences going on right now.
;)

OMG no! 15 minutes into it and i'm locking up now.
Was getting very very good too!

Instruction @ 0x241f8977 ref memory @ 0x00f0f5c0. Mem could not be read.

That could be a RAM problem. Are you overclocking, by any chance?

Yeah, I'm looking into it right now heh. Overclocking nope, running stock. Gonna run some memtest right quick and see if anything comes up.

A quick and dirty solution to get running is to just up your voltages a bit across the board. Bump up your CPU voltage a notch, bump up your RAM voltage a notch or two (ie from 2.5V to 2.6V or 2.7V, which oftentimes memory is spec'ed to run at these days anyways), etc.

Memtest went fine, I cancelled it after a good 30 minutes.
I was running 1280x1024, 1600x1200 was hurting on some of the early scenes but I dropped to 800x600 on another scripted part and it didn't crash this time.
Interesting.
No change in the memory settings or voltages at this point, I'm going to crank the res back up again and see what happens at the next scripted part.
Thanks for the tips Jiffy!

Wel,l I finally got mine working by rearranging the order of my memory DIMMS. Makes no sense, but it worked and I no longer crash with the memory "read" error.

Yeah I think the memory error is due to corrupt files. I can't load d1_canals_01a for the life of me. Redownloading my hl2 install now... sigh.

I have the retail version of Half Life 2 and it crashes to desktop after first load screen. Valve software has not responded to my emails sent through their tech support website and when I try and use the 'online tech support chat' I get disconnected when it is my turn. This problem is discussed on their forums and on the forums of many websites, yet they are not doing anything about it. They see fit to spend their resources tracking down and banning 20,000 people when there are legit users that cannot play.

WinXP Pro, SP2
ATI X800 Pro
1 GB RAM
Athlon 3200XP+ (32-bit)
Audigy 2

I have tried swapping out the optical drives, I verified my Steam files, I did every suggestion I could find on the various websites, all with the same result. I would really love to play the game but I am on the verge of returning it. Yes I could reinstall HL2 on this or one of my other PCs but I am pretty pissed that they would pull this crap. Yes I understand that they have thir hands full with the launch and they probably have many many many thousands of people emailing and calling for help, but come on this game has been in the works for 6 years.

I am curious as to how much time and money they have wasted on Steam and if the time and money spent on it is worth catching hackers and illegal versions.

i got my copy working and im playing it half way thru. :)
I figure out that it is actually the display drivers tat is creating the havoc.
Try installing the lastest drivers or reinstalling it.
