Half life 2 installation problem

I got the 6 cd version of HL2. When i put it in my computer i go to install Half life 2. After installing steam i go to install half life 2. This is where the problem is. The blue bar is going left to right and just stays like this on one file only. the Base source shared materials.gcf file. It stays like this forever, all night. Does anyone know what the problem could be? It says updating system. thanks
 
Is this during the installation from one of the CDs, or when Steam is attempting to unlock/authorize the files? Steam has been getting hammered since Tuesday, so that could be the problem.
 
THis is during the installation of one the Cd's. It might be steam. What did your half life 2 install to. Mine is installing to C:/programfiles/valve/steam? Is this right?
