I don't know what is weaker. The 100 word 'review' itself or the OP posting 40 times trying to justify why he gave a game he hates 80%.

Maybe your eyesight, considering I only posted once to qualify the rating

Nah, it's yours. You posted seven times defending a bad review.

EPIC FAIL.

Wrong actually.

I only posted once to "address why I gave a game I [wasn't impressed with] an 80%" which is what your first post, and my response to that post was about

I don't understand why everyone says HL2 has a great plot. When I think "great plot" in the context of FPSs, I think of something like Deus Ex. HL2's story is not very fleshed out or detailed (Gordon not talking, for example) and feels tacked on in the sense that it's all presented through a couple of cutscenes, with large parts of the game having no connection to it. You could change half of the levels completely and keep the same story. A game's story needs to be intertwined with the maps and gameplay to be truly good. Even Riddick:EFBB, which came out around the same time, had a much better story because it was weaved into the gameplay and levels so well.

I also agree with the other poster about the "assault course" style maps that made the whole game world feel like it existed just for you to go through it.

I don't think it's fair to pitch Deus Ex against HL2 when it comes to story. That's partly RPG, which relies heavily on a elaborate and integral plot. HL2 does have a nebulous and minimalistic plot, but that's probably what they want. It's still better than most of the competition; some of the feeling might linger from HL1 which did pioneer in this area. Besides, a lot of FPS gamers probably don't care about the plot at all and only think it gets in the way.

Well, I see a lot of people saying that the poor level design (which was my biggest gripe with it) and fairly average gameplay is tolerable because of the plot, which I thought was nothing special. You can certainly do worse than it, but at the same time there are FPSs with better stories, even recent ones. As you said, I think it's partly just because it was HL1's sequel.

I consider Deus Ex to be mostly an FPS though. The stat building aspect makes it have some things in common with RPGs, but the basic gameplay and combat mechanics are all FPS stuff. This is a bit OT, but speaking of Deus Ex, I ran into this earlier today. I haven't laughed so much in a while. :D

Bump.

Now that I just finished EP1 and 2, I want to add my opinion....

I though HL1 was decent, but overrated. HL2 was even more overrated. 1/3 driving a hovercraft, another 1/3 driving a car, and another 1/3 *I don't remember*.....

I bought EP1 and 2 because of the bundle, but I gotta say EP2 was AWESOME.

I havne't had that much fun playing a game in a long time. EP1 was decent, but repetitive.

The driving portion was long enough to have fun, but not too long where you get bored. The dialogue from Alex was top notch... her facial gestures and body language and voice acting and actual dialogue was great. Even though the main character doesn't speak, they make the team duo work and the witty lines she delivers is different from the other episodes.

I did have a WTF moment when I grabbed the spores and took an elevator up to where she lay... but they had no idea the spores were right beneath them.

And that whole scene once you get to White Forest was great... the ending was great too. Shocking... They're usually very conservative with the story and not keen to give away too much and keep things vague.
