I don't think Doom III would run on anything less than an XBox, honestly. The PS2 would just butcher the graphics with its powerful 4MB of texture RAM

That's exactly what EGM said about Half Life 2.... the PS2 isn't powerful enough... and the XBOX is similar to the PC specs.

Microsoft is actively courting id Software for the exclusive console rights to Doom III

Is completely different from:

Doom 3 and Half Life 2 are gonna be X-BOX console exclusives... at least at launch.

Well it's not entirely BULLSH!T 😉 What Microsoft wants, Microsoft gets. It would blow major @$$ on the PS2/GC anyway, in terms of graphics. Next year will be the year of FPS on the XBox - Halo2, Doom3, and HL2 🙂 Yum

Hopefully. PC gaming is such a snore right now.

Back in the 32bit era I paid no attention to consoles, they sucked.

Nowadays, consoles run circles around PC games. All thats left thats good on the PC is a few FPS and RTS games here or there, and even so theyre still not as good as they used to be. PC gaming used to have online gaming over consoles, but that is slowly fading.

I simply am getting sick and tired of the driver bugs, the game bugs, the unoptimized performance, unfinished games, terrible netcode, cheaters etc. I pop the game in the console and I play. No bugs, runs great.
So when's the NEXt gen of consoles coming out? . . . Fall 2005. 😛

That's TWO WHOLE YEARS FOR CONSOLE TO SUCK. Your Xbox is gonna choke on DoomIII and HL 2 unless its graphics is "dumbed down" to give satisfactory framerates.

At least you can "patch' a buggy PC game. And if it is "slow" you can usually do an INCREMENTAL upgrade (i.e. RAM/GPU/CPU etc.). In just TWO short years your X-box will be in the trash . . . :Q

ok, first, isn't one of doom3's claims to fame all those dx9 goodies in there? At last check, unless MS gives out free upgraded xboxes, the gfx chip in the xbox is unable to take advantage of it. This means it is damn near unlikely that MS will get their hands on it for an xbox exclusive title.

Also, am I the only one who thinks that not even HL2 will be able to top the original HL in terms of single player? I doubt HL2 deathmatch will trump CS as well. I predict original > sequel here.

PC games were never in "decline."

The whole gaming sales for consoles and the PC go in cycles. A new set of consoles are released, PC games go down in sales. After a few years, PC technology starts to crush the Consoles and there is an increase in PC sales (what we are about to see).

Every 5 years or so when the next gen consoles are released, people always yell "PC gaming is dying! This is the end."

People have a short memory.

I seriously doubt Doom3 / HL2 will *revive* the industry - I think the industry has been the same over the last few years. Half Life itself wasn't that great of a game - it's just the it's fast optimized code alongside CounterStrike - allowed it to survive the test of time.

Don't get me wrong they will both be damn impressive and will have a crazy amount of sales but I don't think it'll make too much of a difference in the scheme of things. And to add to that, I think it would probably be wiser for CounterStrike to *upgrade* to HL2 a year after it's been released so that all the obsolete junkies that currently run CounterStrike will most likely have upgraded that little bit so they can play Hl2 CounterStrike w/ that same speed.
