I think the commentary mode is an interesting option, since I like the subject and theory of game design. But I still want to play through Episode 1 without the invulnerability that comes with the commentary mode. Is there any way to turn IDDQD off? This was going to be my second playthrough since last year, and I don't want to miss either this playthrough nor the commentary mode.

Commentary mode should be turned on when you're on your second or more playthrough, not the first.

If you're not ready to sacrifice the gameplay, then don't bother with the commentary yet. Wait until you've gotten everything you want out of the game, then learn why the devs did what they did (and how). :)

I've already played through it once, last year. Rather than play through it twice in a row now, I'd rather combine my second run with the commentary mode. Is there no way to turn off the invulnerability? Technically it should be as simple as typing "IDDQD" used to be, as long as the option is available somehow, either through a console command, a .cfg setting or something else.

I haven't heard that code in years. I actually forgot all of the Doom cheat codes. I am pretty sure that typing IDDQD in Heretic would kill you though.
