Half-Life 2 Collector's Edition - $49.99 Shipped!

Only problem w/ DoD:S in my mind is that since it supposedly will only be available to CE owners or silver+ steam accounts, without even the option to purchase it separately, the number of people who will be playing it will be limited. Though it might not be if enough people make the bigger purchase. In any case I'm (so far) happy with the $35 I paid at Amazon for the standard version (w/ a $10 certificate).

In any case, the performance issues people seem to have been having have to do with texture thrashing on the video card, with a side effect being sound stuttering. They have supposedly released a patch which fixes it, though I never noticed it to begin with, so I can't say for certain if it fixes all cases.

Still, it's a decent deal even at $59.99 since Valve charges $90 for the gold package, which is essentially the same thing with the soundtrack and some other random goodies, but minus the DVD since most of the stuff is downloaded.

I got CE for 2 reasons:

DVD and not 5 losable cds
DoD:Source when it comes out (hopefully won't be crap)

AND it's nice to have all the previous HL games for some nostalgic play.

I don't think it's a rip-off at all; it's just not what a lot of cheapasses expected.

EDIT: btw I got mine for $60 at GoGamer.

The CE for $50 is certainly not a ripoff, but the CE for the MSRP $79.99 is a ripoff. They could've at least given the full strategy guide and maybe the CE will pull its weight. $30 extra is not worth it for a large cardboard box, DVD-ROM, and XL T-Shirt. Half-Life Source is pretty disappointing too.

Compared to other CE's that cost the same, this one is at the bottom of the barrel.

If DoD:Source is a huge success, I don't see why Valve wouldn't sell it separately. Keep in mind that HL Deathmatch is a recent addition, possibly influenced by the angry community (angry towards a very buggy, hack laden CS:S).

it's a bigger ripoff when the game doesn't work. HL2 is crap

you have no business even contemplating running games like HL2 with your outdated last century hardware, so go beach somewhere else

$50 almost makes me regret getting the regular version for $38 @ GoGamer, but an extra 30% for HL:S and a DVD won't make me lose any sleep. Still, not a bad deal.

Edit: Shows as $60 for me.

Yeah, I think the deal just got worse and went to $59.99. Did the deal w/GoGamer that was $61 after $2 shipping, so I can't complain.
Now if MediaMail would fvcking arrive already 😉

Heh, I spend the extra $4 and got 2 day Fedex (7-15 business day shipping is outrageous IMO). Played it for a few hours last night. Unbelievable experience. Quick question: do you need the CD (or DVD) to play HL2? Or is it all preloaded on your comp? Just wondering, haven't tried it myself yet.

The game works flawlessly.
go ahead, say that on valve's official site site, and see where it gets you.
So please keep your rude comments to yourself.
being socially incorrect (rude) is not as bad as being ignorant. So please keep your ignorance to yourself. I'm assuming you have zero experience with the flawed aspects of this shoddy program based on your claim.

fact: it runs like dirt on some bleeding edge machines
fact: it runs ok on some bleeding edge machines

this equals: a serious purchasing gamble.

people looking to buy this have a right to know before they burn 80$. Wish I had known. Valve is dirty for shipping this.

I am thinking of getting this ONLY because it's a DVD. I'm not an XL. WhoTF is an XL? What total crap. I hate it when these "one size fits all" are for the fattest people on the planet, and look like blankets on most of us.

I digress. Anyway, the guide in this is also apparently pretty lame, but one dvd vs. 5 cds is not bad. If you want the game cheap you can buy it for high 30's in the buy new/used for amazon's non collector's ed. Some are thailand versions...not sure if that's ok or not, but some are US copies too.

Hey pal, *I* wear XL and I'm NOT fat. I am 6'2 and 220, but I have *very* wide shoulders and thicker arms, so I have to wear extra large. Yeah, it *can* be a little flappy at first but once you wash them they shrink to a nominal size.

Fat. Sheesh! 🙂

This is not a thread crap.

Just a notice.

Some people that buy the Retail Half-Life 2 have reported issues with the "Securom" copy protection and/or the CD-Check code that Vivendi Universal has on the retail disc when attempting to play the game from a CD or DVD burner drive.

If you can get it, I personally recommend the Half-Life 2 package version (available over Steam), since no CD-Check is performed and/or there is no Securom, since you download it via Steam.

Just a notice.

Gentle

P.S. If you want to run Half-Life 2 with Texture Quality: High, you would be wise to have at least 768meg ram.

wtf does that have anything to do with the deal ? and btw, the collector's edition is steam-based, you do not need to put anything in the drive to play it after it's installed. So all your "securum" mumbo jumbo is irrelevant. more on pwned !
