Half crunched WU?

NEW question:

I have a half crunched WU that was being crunced with the gui version. I have switched to the Cli but i forgot to move the files bvefore I started the cli and I have some WU in my cache now too - can I add that Half crunched WU to the cache? how? are we SOL?

Here is the "problem": I have 2 computers running seti@home. The first one is a 1Ghz T-bird(main sys) and the 2nd is a P3 700(ftp server).

The first thing is: Since my ftp server is "slower" and has people accessing it (plus I use that one to download stuff constantly) That one should make my crunching times alot longer than my Main Machine, correct? - I thought so 😛

So with that in mind why would the P3(ftp) be at 58% - 10hrs and my main machine at 35%? The reason I think something is farged up is because they have been running overnight, ie. I have not been using them!, so ~100% of the clock cycles on my main machine should be crunching for seti - but It isn't!

Anyone have a clue what might be causing my main(1ghz t-bird) to be SLOWER than the machine that is constantly being used?

Give us a bit more info:

1. What version of SETI: GUI or Cli?
2. Do you have power saving or screen saver on either system?
3. What chipset for each box?
4. What is the fsb and memory setting on each machine?

You answers will help us answer you question. You might even fix it from clues you get from the questions! 🙂

1. Gui version 3.03 - i think - what is Cli?(command line i....?)
2. No screensavers - only monitor shutdown after 20 mins - on both systems
3. on the P3 700 - the board is a Soyo 7ISA+ - Intel 815E chipset I believe
on the T-bird - the board is a ECS K7AMA - ALiMajik chipset
4. P3 is on at 100fsb - the 1Ghz T-bird is at 133fsb(266) - P3 is using standard(pc133) SDRAM but the T-bird is using Corsair pc2100. Both systems have 512MB of RAM (2X256)

Problem is that the T-bird should be SOOOOO much faster at crunching but is 2X slow as a machine that is constantly being used.

The first thing I noticed is that you are running the GUI! It is VERY SLOW! You really should switch to the Cli version. I suggest you use SetiDriver to control the Cli version and cache a few days worth of WUs in case of a network outage.

I don't know what the memory performance is for the ECS K7AMA with the ALiMajik chipset. You might check it with SiSoft Sandra's memory benchmark. All other indications point to the Athlon being faster by an hour or more. The Athlon should run a WU in less than 6 hours with the Cli version of S@H.

I Checked on your mobo and it should be a decent performer. It support both DDR and SDRAM memory types. I have the SIS735 version of that board.

k - thats what i thought = T-bird should be much faster - but it isn't!

Something is Farged cuz the computers are setup exactly the same in the seti client and win2k is identical and the power settings are the same. But the slower one is kicking the crap out of the faster one - What gives.

I may try the Cli version but I think i'll probably screw that one up too 😉

I wonder if the video would have an affect on the Gui? If you have a better video card on the slower box, it could be assisting that system with the graphics crunching of the Gui. Otherwise I am at a loss! 😕

It is really hard to screw up the Cli version when using SetiDriver. Put them both in a directory with the current WU and start SetiDriver. Tell it how many WUs you wish to cache, save the settings and let that sucker crunch!

k - i got the Cli setup with the cseti driver - i had started that before I realized i had a WU in the original prog folder - how do i get that WU into the correct dir so it can be finished? - my cache is at 2 so there are 2 folders with WU in them - do I create dir "3" and stick the partially processed ones in there? or are we SOL on the partially processed one?

Two choices that I will suggest:

1. Forget it cause it will be a lot of trouble

2 This should work, but I can't try it to verify. Change the Cache size to 0 on SETIDriver. Transmit the results whenever a WU is done. When the cache is empty shutdown SetiDriver and copy the executables only to the directory with the partial WU. Restart SetiDriver. Change Cache size and save. It should pickup the old WU and download more new ones.

I remember seeing around here that the CLi version can't continue processing WUs that were started by the GUI version so I think you are SOL on that one.

As far as the t-bird is concerned do you have it set to power down the hard drive after some time because that would kill your times?

no - powerdown set on the harddrive - everything is live all the time minus the monitor which shuts off after 20 mins inactivity.

I have seen messages in the past few months where members stated that the Cli version did pick up where the Gui left off. Have not tried it, but it wouldn't have hurt to try if done when Cli first installed.
