what does HAL stand for ? changed my mobo, processor and ram and kept the old drive. didnt read here first and now i have to recover the drive. its back in the old system and running. read a post from dclive about changing the controller to standard pci ide controller. then he says as long as the HAL is the same the new pc will boot. what is HAL and how do i know if its the same?

there i go again thinking i know it all and now look at the trouble i'm in lol

also, do i change the controller in the bios or device manager ?

okay i found out you change the driver in device manager under the ide controller tab. but how do i change it is the big question. do i click on update, roll back driver, uninstall or what.?

Boot the PC system using the existing (previous) motherboard. **If you've installed the UltraATA Driver (if so, Device Manager->IDE Controllers->Primary Channel will be lacking its usual "Advanced Settings" tab) then uninstall said driver from Control Panel and reboot before continuing **

2) From the Device Manager, open up the "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" section. On a typical system there will be three entries under this - the controller itself, and then the primary/secondary IDE channels.

3) Double-click on the entry for the controller, and change the driver to the generic default Microsoft "Standard Dual-Channel PCI IDE Controller". This is to IDE controllers what the Standard VGA driver is to video cards - i.e., it'll work on just about anything, but is rather slow and basic.

i can see where to do it just cant figure out how to change it. i should be gaming not sitting in my basement with my hair on fire and my brain melting lol.

okay i found it and updated it to the standard setting then shut it down. hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for me in the world of pc repair and upgrading. 🙂

I'm in woo hoo !!! couldnt wait for tomorrow. i am sending this message on my new and improved pc. 🙂
