You all now the HAL and IBM thingy (H+1 A+1 L+1 ---> IBM), right?

Now lets have a look at Windows NT (WNT)
Letter before W ---> V
Letter before N ---> M
Letter before T ---> S

We now has VMS, the famous OS

Oooh, and yes... nef.
 
Huh? How did you get VMS? Doubt they would choose the name Windows because it needed a W. Otherwise, it would be William NT or something just as stupid.

but like many acronyms the specific words were chosen (by Clarke) to give the letters their own meaning, like with MADD, DARE, etc. In this case HAL=IBM has more meaning than an "algorithmic" language since they all are 🙂

VAX-VMS, I would guess 70's >>


Actually the 70's were mostly PDP series time. The first VAX's came out in 1978 and the big period for them was the early to mid 80's. They were great machines for their time and very popular with in the research/scientific community due to the UNIBUS architecture. Much like the ISA and PCI bus the UNIBUS was an open architecture which meant 3rd parties could design cards to plug into it allowing all sorts of sensors and data aquisition equipment to hang off of them. I was lucky enough to work with them from 1985-1990 on a contract at the Naval Research Lab. We even had a VAX-11/725 which was small enough for us to get inside a P3 aircraft while it was on the ground for doing work with an infrared sensor.

It may have more meaning to the people who don't know what heuristics is. I did make a mistake though. Language is not part of the name. It should just be Heuristic Algorithmic. I guess I should have looked it up again instead of just guessing. One of many sources on the name.
