From the article:
The gathering of millions is often the scene of deadly stampedes and other violence.

The most deadly Hajj-related incident was a 1990 stampede in which 1,426 pilgrims were killed
Here is a breakdown of other violent incidents at the annual Muslim pilgrimage:

1998 - 180 people died in a stampede near Mecca at the end of the Hajj;

1997 - A fire in Mina tore through the sprawling, overcrowded tent city , trapping and killing more than 340 pilgrims and injuring 1,500;

1994 - a stampede kills 270 pilgrims;

1991 - a chartered airliner carrying pilgrims home to Nigeria crashed, killing 261;

1991 - a plane crash in northern Saudi Arabia killed 91 Senegalese soldiers returning from a trip to Mecca which had been a reward for their service in the U.S.-led coalition that drove Iraqi forces from Kuwait in the Gulf War a month earlier;

1989 - bombs exploded near the Grand Mosque in Mecca, killing one pilgrim and wounding 16 others;

1987 - some 400 people, mainly Iranian Shi'ite pilgrims, were killed in clashes with Saudi security forces during anti-Western protests in Mecca.
You'd think they'd learn already.

you realize that what u call fundamentalist are only a small percentage of muslims right??

moslems KNOW that the death risk of going hajj is VERY high...

but they do this anyways, its called faith..

IMO I also think this is stupid, but this is their religion, its like drinking blood and flesh of a person, some people might think thats not normal but christians believe in that...

If you think for a second that Christianity plays as big of a role in Christian's lives as Islam does in a Muslim's, I think you are either kidding yourself or grossly misinformed.

Actually some of them will glady die while performing Hajj. They're guaranteed passage to heaven if that happens. Thats why sometimes you see sick elderly makes the pilgrimage there.

Why can't we all just get along, realize that we're all distinctive individuals with individual tastes and beliefs, and realize that we're really no different, regards to our sexual practice, belief, or the color of our skin?

Jeez. The world would simply be so much better if people could get past their petty, stupid differences and stop being so pretentious.

I think he's refering to the "eucharist" (an old-school Catholic thing) where the bread and wine of communion transform into Christ's body when consumed. It took me a minute to see where he was going with that...

Europe is predomoniately anti-semetic
The USA is predominately ant-gay (I CANT BELIEVE THIS!) and anti-muslim
The middle east is anti-western

People are too fsckign stupid. Western religion is an awful thing and can be traced back to most of these issues.

Nobody cares then if I say that it's a good thing that those boys and girls were abused by Catholic priests, right? I mean seeing a priest that often probably meant they were going to be thick in the head with religion anyways, no big loss. What's that you say, they were just kids? I'm sure some kids were trampled in these stampedes too. Big deal!

Not happy, indifferent........big difference my friend. These types of incidences are brought about by ignorance, the type of ignarance that causes a man to blindly follow faith instead of reason.

I would have assumed that anyone wth half a brain would be able to deduce that an institution that disallows marriage and is otherwise very strict and conservative would lead to having pedophiles amongst it's ranks. Notice that priest abuse occurs mostly, if not entirely, in Catholic institutions which disallow marriage but not in other protestant or lutheran instituations that do not have this restriction. These parents should have known better.

Yup it symbolies that.

Muslims. You guys spell it "moslems" or is that a typo? I realise England has a few differences in spelling then Americans.

Well sad that people die but stuff like this is going to happen when you have 2million people there. Only a small % of them are crazy focks like any other religion. But they have had more suicidal bombers though then other religions or so. Or caused more deaths I think.

Lots of mulism haters here. But I have a bunch of muslim friends and most are pretty anti American government!

I also have Muslim friends that share the same political views and the same hatred of ANY fundamentalism as I do.

Western religions I dislike. Fundamentalism I hate.

the hajj is a part of moslem's faith..

also u can spell either way, moslems or muslims

Another thing, these sucidie bombers are extremist, and are only a VERY small percentage of the muslim population

I have a lot of moslem friends back home, and they are nice people (not fundamentalists)

It's SYMBOLIC! The eucharist is where bread and wine are eaten, and those symbolize the blood and body of Christ. Notice how out of context the original poster has taken this to.

Yup I know the crazy bombers are in the minority. Every religion has a bunch of crack pots in it.

And thanks didn't, know you could spell it like that. I have never seen it spelt like that in all my life.

Every religion has their crazy people.

Have any of you ever been to a Christian fundamentalist (and I mean REALLY fundamentalist) website/forum? It's pretty surprising and scary to read some of the posts.

I dislike the fact that so very much of the Islamic world has no interest in improving the human condition.
The concept of tolerance of other belief systems doesn't seem to exist.
Islam can't stand criticism of itself (Salman Rushdie, for example).
The Islamic world has for centuries lacked the ability to create anything new. Except, perhaps, the concept of the religiously motivated suicide bomber.
It seems that the ultimate goal of Islamic "civilization" is to put the entire world under the umbrella of Sharia, Islamic law.

Do I really give a sh*t if a hundred or a thousand Muslims die in the Hajj? No.

Using your logic, moslems think stone pillars are the devil...

The stampede occurred during the stoning of the devil, an emotional and notoriously perilous hajj ritual. Pilgrims frantically throw rocks, shout insults or hurl their shoes at three stone pillars - acts that are supposed to demonstrate their deep disdain for Satan.
