Good read...John Carmack's .finger plans are ALWAYS a good read. Everything he says is true, and everything he has predicted in the past has come true. This guy is a programming genius. Who else could design so many new engines, all with drastic improvements over the course of 3-4 years?

Am I the ONLY one looking forward to the new Doom game? I'm really gonna enjoy a single player experience similar to Doom and Quake 1. Half Life single player is good blah blah, but the original Doom was genuinely SCARY if you played it in the dark! :Q

Yes it is a good read. He even discusses some of the shortfalls of the Geforce 3 and Radeon.

I'm glad that id is making a good single player game again. I really did enjoy Doom2. I thought it was really scary the first time I played it. :Q
I'm sure I will get the same thrill out of the new Doom... I hope.
I hope this game doesn't turn into a Fragger, but rather they come out with new episodes...

Emulex, I don't agree. I'm sure drivers will improve between now and then, plus, You'll be able to turn certain features off to make the game run smoother. I'm sure of that.

the thing with the doom3 engine is that it is optimised to use the geforce3. Like what he said in the presentation is that now we can finaly have shadows that apply to the same rule for every object, that is possible with the Geforce3 because the T&amp;L engine can be coded. This game will not run on cards that dont have T&amp;L and will not run on T&amp;L cards without removing lots and lots of visual effects.

Anyone know when the GF3 will be out? Carmack's .plan said that the game is still way off from release, so there will probably be new generation cards from every other manufacturer by the time it comes out.

Oh, God, I hope it doesn't have the same single player experience as Quake1. That was one of the most boring games I have ever played (single player, not multi -- didn't play multi back then). I hope it's more like Half-Life or System Shock 2 -- actually FUN in single player.

Of course it runs better on a high end Wintel box. The high end ones are 1.2 Ghz or more.
