World Summit Generates Tons of Trash
Fri Aug 30, 4:35 PM ET
By MIKE COHEN, Associated Press Writer

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - While delegates attending the World Summit wrangled over how best to save the planet's rapidly dwindling resources, they gave scant indication of leading by example.

The 10-day summit, billed as the largest U.N. conference ever held, is expected to generate between 300 and 400 tons of trash, and so far, just 20 percent of it is being recycled.

"We never had any illusions this would be a green summit," Mary Metcalfe, the environment minister of the Gauteng province, which includes Johannesburg, told reporters Friday. "At one stage we were hoping to achieve 90 percent diversion (of waste) from landfill sites."

Together with the U.N. Development Program, Metcalfe's office is leading a project ? known as the Johannesburg Climate Legacy ? to monitor and minimize the summit's environmental impact. It's the first time that it's been attempted at any U.N. conference.

Toilets have been fitted with flushing systems to minimize water usage, while two venues hosting summit fringe events are being run with renewable energy sources. Recycling bins have been put in conference halls, but they've ended up as replacements for garbage cans, filled with all sorts of non-recyclable waste.

Consumption barometers were erected in the summit venues, too, graphically illustrating the extent to which resources are being consumed and recycled.

Nonetheless, trash compactors erected at the back of the main conference center have been working overtime, and municipal workers have made several trips daily to empty overflowing trash containers.

The move to make the summit as environmentally friendly as possible was gaining momentum daily, said Nikhil Sekhran of the UNDP's Global Environmental Fund.

"The system is completely new," he said. "Clearly a lot more education needs to be done."

Hundreds of organizations have collectively produced mountains of pamphlets, press statements and brochures, hoping to draw attention to their multitude of causes during the summit.

Organizers estimate 5 million sheets of paper will be consumed during the gathering.

The conference's 45,000 delegates are also plowing through other resources. On average each of them is using 53 gallons of water a day, and the city's electricity consumption has soared.

The legacy project also estimated that flying delegates to Johannesburg and transporting them around the city will generate nearly 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide.

The Johannesburg Climate Legacy project hopes to offset this by raising nearly $3 million from participating countries, corporations and individuals, and using it to implement 16 projects to reduce carbon emissions.

Only $300,000 has been raised, and only seven of the 192 countries at the summit have pledged donations.

,While I am sure most of this sounds reasonable, 300,000 tons of CO2 does not seem plausable.

Oh, trust me, they were there, protesting something, somewhere. There's always something to be protested.

By the way, I make perfect sense.

I'm going to tell the mods on you, because like everybody else at AT, I'm offended by everything.

Now lets move on to part two of your brilliant deduction billyboy.

How is the trash connected to the hippies?

You realize that none of the pics you posted have anything to do with the article you posted, right?

Sometimes I'm a little harsh on people who are obviously "challenged", I thought maybe I could work on mending my ways.

Uh, yeah, there is. I don't know if you've noticed, but there's a lot of problems with the world right now, and has been for years. Sure, let's make fun of the people who are trying to solve some of them and change the world for the better. Crazy dream? Yeah, kinda. But what are you doing to help?

Surely it wasn't caused by this guy...

Doesn't anybody else find it odd that the people who are claiming injustice against poverty-stricken nations lack of free money, food, supplies, and support are protesting against the very nations that can provide these items and do in fact help out in situations like this??

Instead, they blame this man's sickness and lack of money for education, plus pollution, endangered animals across the world, poor and starving nations on George Bush and the United States.

COME ON! How could all of these things possibly be our fault?? Look who's managed to have a relatively decent civilization without having constant civil wars and bombing its residents who are fighting like cavemen over religion or whatever some random country in the Middle East or Africa is doing during any given time.

You'd be surprised. Just take a look at the polution in the atmosphere in any major city. Take a look at 'clean' coal burning power plants that do not produce emissions and ask em how much CO2 they pump out a day....

Ever wonder what the hoopla is about global warming?

Hippies? Hell they all turned in their "Love Beads" and bought stock in MicroSoft or work for Apple Computer.

Enviromental hypocrites...given the chance to walk the talk look what they do. Remember the enviromental disaster that was uncovered when the Soviet Union collapsed? Enviromental movement is nothing more then a slimy sleeve for a hidden socialist agenda.

The media is not of itself evil, however it has unfortunately made it easy and seemingly morally defensible for the common man to participate and defend logical fallacies.

Anyone who reads a daily paper or watches the news should take a look at this link and critically analyze the stories/reports they feel persuaded by according to this list.

Questions, protests, positions, and politics are often and I would say mostly too complex to be summarily attacked/discussed here.... not that we shouldn't try, but it's been my experience you can conclude theintegrity of a given thread by the tone of the first three posts in which case there will be nothing relevant concluded here.

Given billgates380's inability to form cohesive sentences I'll run with this one. Do you suppose that anypeople/organization that concerns themselves with environmental issues to be evil? ...and in fact consider all environmental concerns to be wrong?

No but the extremists who have infiltrated these causes make it hard to support.

Hmm, I think what we can gleen from this article is that even "hippies" are so entangled in this wastefull lifestyle we all lead, that we are doomed to turning this planet into a heap of garbage. Unless, of course, we too become "hippies" and show some restraint and respect for this speck of dust and only known place in the universe that can sustain life.

Some people who talk about saving the environment are somewhat hypocritical.
I was working in downtown Manhattan in 1970 when the first "Earth Day" was celebrated.
The trash left in the streets, sidewalks and Union Square Park was horrendous.
