They kept building it up like it was gonna be some terrible storm and we only got some rain and a bit of lightning. At my friend's party last night someone came in saying there was a tornado headed right toward us. Turns out someone he knows called him and told him there was a "tornado cloud" headed in the direction of town (so yeah, it was just some idiot trying to scare people).

Can't hardly hear the tornado sirens here, but thankfully we live in a basement apartment, so its not a big deal (which is part of the reason why the sirens are hard to hear, but even so, they aren't terribly loud).

My roomate gets all nervous and paces while looking outside every two seconds anytime there is a storm. To be honest, it gets kinda annoying and he starts going off about getting hail damage on his car.

Haha hes worried about his car when a storm is hitting ?

Hellspawn, How did you become a weather watcher?

I'm scared of storms, maybe something like that would help me face my fears.

Got involved years ago when they had a public training class at a local community college by NWS personnel . You have to be recertified every few years. Your best bet would be to contact the director of the local ESDA (emergency services & disaster agency) of your county. Generally the spotter certification classes are given for about 2 months each early Spring. I was just recertified for the 7th time in about 13 years, as the classe(s) were held one night about a month ago now. Seen numerous funnels, couple small ones touch the ground, nothing over an F2.

Saw a cold air funnel (damn beautiful one) about 2 Saturdays ago in the morning.

I can guarantee you that the first time you see a tornado form and hit the ground your blood will run cold for a moment when you realize what you are seeing. It did for me. Now it gets the adrenaline going.

I'm no longer fearful of storms and severe weather, but I surely still respect them.

Good luck and it's something you can do also to help the NWS and your local community. Also as a ceritified spotter you can and do get calls from the NWS on occasion as to what is happening at your location and also you have a direct hotline and ID so you can call in reports to the NWS and also law enforcement agencies. They then can relay it to the NWS.

Have you ever had some amazing lightening?

numerous funnels, seen a decent amount of rotation pass overhead on occasion, couple of F0, F1, F2. Nothing more than that, and nothing that was closer than maybe 1.5 miles away. Biggest hail was about Baseball about 9 years ago. Broke the windshield in my truck :(

32 years ago tomorrow was the April 3, 1974 outbreak in the Midwest...the worst outbreak of tornadoes ever, I believe.

Some small hail coming down now, I can hear it...my UPS devices are having fun.

Yes, quite bad, if not the worst. The March 25, 1925 twister came right through this area of Southern Illinois (SE MO and SW IN also). In the Paducah NWS region, it's April, May and June that are the worst for twisters.. Primarily between 12noon and 9pm on average. They teach you to always refer to it as coin-sized (whatever is most appropriate), not marble-sized as marbles come in many sizes. Of course, pingpong, baseball, softball, for the bigger stuff, but dime, quarter, is preferred.

Sorry to hear that. The shed on the edge of my property is pretty much a loss. Going to have to tear what is left of it down for insurance reasons.
