Don't know exactly how old she was- I had her about 5 years, she was prolly 4-5 when I got her.

I still expect to trip over her in the dark hallway.....

I am very sorry for your loss and understand all too well how difficult a time it is. Be thankful for all the good times you had and also that things moved along fairly quickly therefore causing less stress in an already stressful situation.

Last year right at the end of March my male Maine my excellent compatriot cat of 17 1/2 years had an episode which we thought was nothing more than a hairball but he never recovered and the vet kept thinking he would pop out of it so each morning I took him in and every evening I picked him up starting on a Monday morning with the understanding we would give him until the end of the week to come out of it. He didn't and instead first stopped eating and the drinking. It was one of the most difficult weeks of my life and that Friday afternoon was devastating when I finally had to go in while they put him down. It was selfish of me to keep hanging onto the belief he would come back to normal and I feel guilty that I made him wait to April 1st.

To make matters worse I had elected have him cremated since it is against state law to here to take home your animals for burial but I could recover the ashes. The company my vet used picked up Shadoe but that was the last time I ever saw him. Weeks went by and excuses where made. Finally after several calls I had enough and decided I was going down to the crematory. That morning just prior to me leaving the house I received a call telling me not to go that a story just broke on the news concerning the place my vet used for this service. Some of you may have heard the story of dog?s bodies being dumped in Virginia. This was the company that had our cat and once it was said and done had just thrown him in the corner with no intensions of doing anything else. I spent the next seven months off and on testifying or waiting to do so on behalf of the state. My wife?s cat of 16 plus years didn't make it long afterwards only about three months making for a terrible summer for both of us.

Sorry for being so long winded and I am not meaning to highjack your thread but I feel that sometimes it is difficult, especially for non-pet owners to realize exactly how special of a part of our families our pets become.

Take care getting through this difficult time!

Before me and my wife were married, she was going to college about 4 hours from me, and I still remmeber the time she called crying, saying that one of her cats had died. She had gotten worms, which is a very rare thing for cats, and the only sign is their death. She was such a soft, evil kitty... (Yes, pet me, I'm soft... Very sof. Okay, now I'm going to bite you!!). Sorry to hear about your pal. We have four cats now, and I hate to think about losing any of them....

Dangit, me too. *sniff* :(

I have had several friends lose pets recently, and I couldn't find this story. Thanks Smoke, as I will be passing it on.

me 3...

my dog means the world to me. i can't say that i understand how you feel because i've never felt it that close to home before, but i know just how much i care about my pet, and that i'd never want to see anything happen to him, though. know that you did the right thing, jc.

here's wishing you all the best...
