Had knee surgery today.

Has anyone had something like this done? I was surprised at how little pain I have right now.

For those who might have it, I highly recommend getting a cold therapy unit.. This this is awesome. I don't have to deal with ice on ice off over and over, as it controls it all.

If you have had this, can I expect for pain to start up in the near future? They are saying 4-5 days and I should be walking normally. Right now I'm walking with a limp and sometimes a cane.

Not had your type of surgery but wanted to wish you the best.

<----- Been off for the last two weeks from double hernia surgery.

I had something similar 5 years ago. The ortho replaced my demolished ACL and removed most of my medial meniscus.

Mine hurt like a mofo for about 2 weeks...but that's why he gave me a 55 gallon barrel full of oxycontin. 😀
I was on the continuous passive motion machine for a week or two. Bends the knee to varying degrees, even while you sleep. (yeah, right)

I still have tons of problems with my knee, and the ortho sez that until it deteriorates enough to justify a "scraping" (knee replacement) I just have to live with the pain. There's so little meniscus left, that in a couple of places, I'm almost bone-on-bone in there.

If the Meniscectomy wasn't too severe, you should recover just fine...but IME, you WILL feel some residual effects...especially when the weather turns bad.

I've had a knee replacement and it was one of the best things I ever did. It took 10 years of constant pain before I could convince the ortho that it was necessary. They don't like to do knee replacements on younger folk (well, I was then) because it's likely that the replacement will have to be replaced at some point. There isn't enough data to let them be comfortable, yeah, to hell with the patients comfort.

I was on a prototype passive motion machine for 6 weeks and once it walked itself off the bed. That was fun. There were nurses, techs and orderlies dancing around because the prototype had a lock step programming module and no one knew how to turn it off. Meanwhile, I'm discovering new colors of pain and scream "unplug it!" Somebody did and there was a moment of silence except for my heavy breathing before the head nurse said, "Why didn't we think of that?"

Oy, pass the drugs.

The gave me oxycontin, Loratabs, an Anti-Biotic, and a anti-inflammatory drug.

Edit: Fixed the drug name

Glad you're gettin' all natural fiber. 😀

lol

Hope everyone's recovery goes smoothly and as pain-free as possible.

ROFL!! Taking dietary fiber to a whole new t-shirt.😀

My doc also gave me Vicodan, (norco) but I'm allergic to the stuff...so I also had to take Benadryl  instead of changing my meds to something that I could tolerate better.

oh yeah...and valium...lots of it. 😀

I still have quite a few of those in my "emergency drug box."😀

Last year I saw an orthopedic surgeon after experiencing 'clicking' and instability in my right knee (which seemed to point to a meniscus tear). I eventually had an MRI which apparently showed no meniscus tear. The doctor did mention that this type of injury doesn't always show up in an MRI and that surgery was an option if I wanted to pursue it.
I pretty much left it there since surgery definately scares me, but I've really been considering it lately since it seems to be getting worse. Overall, how was the procedure? How severe were your symptoms?

Thanks,
Ed

Ugh..

I have a grade 3 tear of my meniscus and a slightly torn ACL. Just today my other knee had a sharp pain. I'm hoping it's nothing though.

I haven't gotten surgery yet and the knee feels a lot better than when I first tore it but I'm sure it'll need to be looked at sometime in the future.

I got the tear after climbing down 35 flights of steps in a "mandatory" fire drill. I am never doing that again. They can go screw themselves.

I had the same surgery back in high school. It was painless. Though I was supposed to be on crutches for a week, I walked without them the very next day. A week later, I forged a doctor's note so I could play baseball.

I never had any pain. I did go for physical therapy for about two months just to strengthen things.

my knee still hurts 20 years after I had my knee surgery. 🙁 Of course I had to wait 6 months after I tore up my knee since I was 6000 miles from an orthopedic surgeon. So you will be alright. Just do your physical therapy with a passion.

When I go in for my quarterly epidural injections, the pain management doc hits me with what he calls his "Cocktail," a mix of fentanyl and versed (think demarol and valium) into the IV. 😀
Then, when he gives the injection, he mixes the cortisone with some "caine," lidocaine, novacaine, cocaine, I'm not really sure which one it is...nor do I really care. My back goes numb for several days...and the pain disappears for a few days.
Then, that wears off and I hurt for a couple of days till the steroids kick in and start to work.

The numbing agent in the injection works so well that I'd go in for that procedure every dammed week if they'd let me...It's worth the "minor discomfort" of having the needle stuck into my spine.
