Had all 4 Wisdom teeth removed, sitting here in pain staring at the codeine bottle....

I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed today (yesterday), and it wasn't too bad early, but now it seems to be hurting a lot more. I hope it isn't infected. As I sit here in pain, I wonder if I should take the codeine they prescribed me. I hear lots of people who take it experience bad side effects like naseu/headaches/vomitting which are all common.

Also I don't know if or how I should brush my teeth. Needless to say this sucks!

I got them out yesterday and I'm not feeling anything. Taking Advil seems to help, I do have swelling and I can't chew though.

I didn't brush my teeth for maybe two days after I got my wisdom teeth out, I just rinsed my mouth out with salt water (good for gums).

I personally just took advil for the pain. I had vicodin, and that stuff made me feel really sick.

dang, I need to get my wisdom teeth removed soon also.

Now I'm scared 🙁

Don't wory csyberblue. I had mine pulled in July. Used one vicodin and that's it. No pain really, just a dull ache. It healed much faster than expected.

Unfortunately 2 of my wisdom teeth were impacted, 1 pretty badly, so it wasn't a simple procedure. It was kinda weird b/c I was only under local anesthetics, so I was awake all while he was slicing up my gums and shattering my teeth.

Is it normal to still be spitting out blood like 12+ hours later?

my wisdom teeth were impacted and as soon as the anesthesia wore off i was on the ground with tears in my eyes. this was at the Savon while i was trying to get my prescription filled. my gf had to drive me around and take care of me while i writhed in utter pain.

the prescribed me vicodin too. didnt help all that much.

Take the pain meds man 😱 But only as prescribed and eat and drink plenty of milk with them. Then take a nap.
And yes the blood spitting is normal for a few days.

i got local anesthesia too, doesn't hurt at all during the procedure. mine weren't even erupted yet for the lower ones, so slice and dice and saw. just freaky.

i took the pain medicine soon after i got home. i never felt any pain really after. i forgot which one it was, but it was probably good stuff considernig the addiction warnings 🙂

i don't remember spitting blood that much later though. just be gentle. don't suck at all, u don't want those blood clots going anywhere. do everything very slowly. rinse with salt water, and gently drink some blended or food processed food if needed.

The pain should subside in a day or two depending on the extent of the procedure. If you are worried about the codeine don't take it. As with all medications you need to weigh side affects versus gains. If you feel like you need it, take the codeine (do not mix or combine drugs outside of your doctors recommendations!). Sometimes decreasing the pain make the experience tolerable. Pain causes neurotransmitters (corticosteroids) to be released in your system causing increased blood pressure and other effects in your system (think of it as a long term fight or flight response). This causes you to fell uncomfortable in ways that are hard to describe. Pain is the most obvious but other things are acting on your system. Removing a pain stimulus can do wonders and bring smiles back to peoples faces. Just out of curiosity, what was the exact prescription that you were given?

You should rinse your mouth out with warm salt water for the first 24 hrs and then you can brush as normally as you can. Be careful to rinse completely (gentle not vigorous) when done.

I remember when I had my third molars (wisdom teeth) out I thought the pain would never go away but it eventually did and after a week I was back to normal with no ill effects. Take some time to watch movies and catch up on some reading.

If you feel that the pain is too great or that something may be wrong contact the dentist or oral surgeon that did the extractions.

True true true about the blood clots. Make no suction in the mouth: straw, cigarettes, or other things. If a clot is dislodged then you may get "dry socket" (alveolar osteitis). I won't bother with the symptoms in fear of making you a hypochondriac. You WILL know if you have dry socket. Contact your dentist ASAP. Its very easy to treat and the results are almost instantaneous.

Whatever you do, don't drink through a straw. Try rinsing your mouth with salt water often, and sleep with an elevated head. The better you take care of yourself now, the quicker the pain will go away.

Yes. Straw = idiotic. It's counterintuitive, yes (you'd think that nonfunctional jaw/teeth would lend itself to liquid food through a straw), but you mustn't use the straw. The vaccuum you create will rip your blood clots off and keep your wounds bleeding for much longer than they should.

Must suck to be conscious during the whole thing... I was out like a light.

And yeah, IIRC, my bleeding didn't completely stop until about 24 hours later.

If you're worried about the side-effects of codeine, just take some Tylenol, it couldn't hurt, it actually worked for me a lot better than the vicodin did.

Well, my experience was quite pleasant. Completely knocked out for the procedure, took like 30 minutes, woke up in a wheelchair (not quite sure why, didn't think I needed it). I got home, put the gauze in my mouth, and watched some tv for a while, bleeding stopped in about 2 hrs. I had almost no swelling, but chewing was still a bitch.

Vicodin contains Tylenol, plus narcotic. How would plain Tylenol work better than Vicodin for pain?

Yeah I didn't understand that either. Maybe I was just crazy, but whenever I took the Tylenol first in the morning it always seemed to do the trick better than the vicodin in the morning. *shrug*

Heh, I remember when I got mine removed. It wasn't as bad as I thought, because a surgeon did it for me, rather than my normal dentist. Once the numbing feeling wore away, it was so freaking painful. I was tempted to take the painkillers he prescribed me, but knowing the possible sideaffects, I just sucked up the pain and played video games 🙂

Vicodin makes me quesy. If you are worried about feeling sick (and you really dont' want to be puking with open wounds in your mouth) then break the pills in half and take a half at first to try it out. Half might take the edge off without making you feel sick.
