Had a tuneup done and my mileage dropped..wtf..

So I drive a '99 Civic EX with manual tranny with 93k miles. When I purchased it, it needed a tuneup, had burnt out bosch spark plugs, and I was getting ~35mpg. I had a major tuneup performed, replaced all belts, changed water pump, replaced plugs with NGK platinums, had balancing/alignment/rotation performed.

Now i'm getting an average of maybe 22mpg. What gives?

I'm the one who tuned it up. I accidentally left 10 dead hookers in your trunk...empty them out and your mileage should increase a bit...

Not unusual - something was gunked up in just such a way that caused less fuel to be pumped into the engine, thereby increasing fuel efficiency 😛

hmm.

Strange... the only thing I can think of is perhaps the wrong plugs were put in.

you could also take it back where you had it tuned up and demand a free recheck because they obviously messed something up
I just recently had an alignment done because the car was drifting to the left, now after they "aligned" it it PULLS to the left. Great... So I'm gonna take it back and demand a free redo because they screwed it up. Basically, if anyone wants to keep reputation they'll take care of their mess-ups, in your case the tune-up (which sounds like a tune-down to me)
Now if they don't care about their rep, well....

My Volvo got great gas mileage because of its weak fuel pump. 🙂

Well I saw the mechanic install the plugs, and he didn't gap them at all...he said you're not supposed to gap platinum plugs...

I haven't had a chance to go back (this place is next to my old job, a good 50 miles away) 🙁 ... 22mpg for a civic is retarded, especially since I keep the revs so low...

now that it just got a tune-up you don't feel bad about driving like a dick. the harder acceleration is eating gas. you'll notice your decrease in gas mileage and think something is wrong and then you'll baby it again and thus get your 35mpg back.in 60k miles you'll do this again

I do believe this is true, actually...

It's the only thing that really makes sense, though.. The belts and water pump wouldn't affect milage, even if flubbed up.

A drop anywhere from 3-5 MPG and I'd understand that. 13? Hell no. I think he'd know the difference between him driving at 60 and getting 35MPG and him doing burnouts left and right, driving 100+MPH and putting the pedal to the floor.

I hope my sarcasm meter is borked. :-\

Sort of true... They should come factory set. But they should also be checked before installing them. The problem is people will gap then improperly (wedging a guage in there) and mess the plug up.

I'd find out the right plug number for the brand they put in, check that is what they used, and 2 pull them and check the gap itself.

Lastly if that doesn't do it, while a PITA pull the battery wires for however long it takes to reset the computer (from seconds to hours depending on the car - overnight is usually a safe bet). Then the computer will not be using old data for its tuning. Or just ride it out for a tank or 2 and see if it improves. The computers on some cars have a hard time adjusting when several things change all at once. It's a PITA as you will have to reset things like your radio stations...

Rep? What are you going to do? Tell all your friends not to go there?
