Had a new and possibly terrifying experience.

This afternoon I answered a call which turned out to be from an automatic telemarketer and for some reason my phone shut itself down after about 3 seconds into the call. Wouldn't start up again for several hours.
I find it a fantastic coincidence it happened the same morning my phone got a big ass security update. (Nokia 7.2 if anyone cares)
Kinda scary how quickly my device became useless. If it had happened out in the middle of nowhere and I was trying to get help I'd have been in real trouble. Reminded me how much we rely on our smartphones and theres fewer resources because they are so prolific. We dont have phone booths anymore. Phone books are not laying around anymore. I rarely see printed maps available anywhere. Could not tell you where my local library is, I've never visited it. Many years ago when I was in a library I noticed they no longer carried encyclopedias.

Anyway, you guys have have a shutdown initiated in the middle of a call?

How long have you had your phone? If it's been a while and the battery is worn down a bit, your phone might have asked for more power than the battery could deliver.

That's actually why Apple started throttling iPhones (now an optional thing). It made sure the phone wouldn't abruptly shut down if as it got older.

Nope. Its only a year old. Battery is fine and it was plugged in. I honestly think it was some kind of system error.

Any chance that it just needed rebooted after the update? Granted that wouldn't explain it not starting back up for hours, which to me seems more like a bad battery contact, if it has a removable battery or got wet inside.

Lack of phone booths is annoying, but on the other hand, since everyone has a phone, it's often not hard to get someone to make a call for you. If going out into the middle of nowhere, in winter take gloves/coat or blanket, or year 'round, water, snacks, first aid kit. A gallon of distilled water is always nice to have even if it's for your radiator instead of drinking.

Then there are backup burner phones. Often on HSN, QVC, etc you can get a tracfone with a year of service for under $80 then subsequent years added for about $50, depending on the deal at the time. There were a few deals in the past on ebay at $30 to $40 /year airtime and you could stack those to have years of service for under $4/month. This provides an alternative against damage, theft, dead battery and more if you don't want to put all your eggs in one basket.

Nokia had an illustrious history of smartphones... just not in North America, where you rarely saw more than the basic phones for the longest time. I have a Windows-based Lumia 1020 sitting on my desk! (Not in active use, it's several years old now.)

The current Nokias are technically made by HMD Global, which is a sort of spiritual successor to the classic Nokia phone brand. Lots of Android phones that are typically budget-oriented but often solid value for the money.
