Had a little "race" with an 89 Accord LXi coupe...

About 9 in the morning, I was driving to a location with two of my coworkers, one of which was in my car. I drive a 95 Geo Prizm LSi (115 HP baby!) with a stick. The third coworker (keep in mind, this guy's about 40 years old) pulled up next to us in his 89 Accord at a red light. He used his e-brake to come to a screeching halt, then revved his engine a bit. So I revved my engine a bit. When the light turned green, we took off. I was about 1.5 car lengths ahead of him after the first block, and probably would have kept pulling away but we had to turn to get to our destination. When we got to the parking garage I yelled out "115 horsepower ownz you!".

That was the highlight of my morning. 😀

haha, my friend completly upgraded everything in his 1991 geo storm and it's pretty fast....well... probably ~135hp now. He always pulls out first only because he has a stick but I end up pulling right next to him @ 70mph in my 91 stock Capri 🙂

If I recall correctly the 89 Accord lxi had 125hp. The Geo most likely weighs less so the extra 10hp is probably lost due to the extra weight. Add in the fact that you had stick, and he probably had automatic transmission, and yes you will win every time.
Manual Transmissions rule. (At least until it's time for a new clutch :/ )

Pretty close! A 1989 Accord LXi coupe weighs 2646 pounds, and makes 120 HP. A 1995 Prizm weighs 2359 pounds and makes 115 HP. Hmmm...I need to go laugh at my friend now. He has a 1989 Accord DX coupe, which weighs 2493 pounds. He's always trumpeting how light it is, but it turns out my car weighs less! BTW, the other guy did have a manual transmission, and I had another person in my car while he was alone. Of course, his car is also 6 years older than mine, so it's probably lost some power over the years.

Speaking of clutches, the one in my car seems to be way overengineered for its application. I haven't actually looked at it, but my dad was surprised at how steep a hill it could hold the car on. And besides, it'll still be way cheaper to replace that than if I had an auto and it broke. Another friend of mine has a 93 Volvo 850, and she just got slapped with a $2500 bill for her transmission...and that was for a rebuild! :Q

The guy I raced had an LXi, meaning fuel injection. But yes, the carbed engine does suck. Something like 90HP, I believe. That's what my friend has in his DX.

I would be very worried if a Spec V couldn't beat a Focus. 😛

Even an SVT? That might give you a run for your money... a European Focus RS (200+hp turbo) would smear the Sentra SpecV, same with that crazy @$$ Ford Focus with the LS1(?) small block in it.

Well, first of all, he didn't say it was an SVT focus. I think that might've been a pertinent detail. 😉 Why stop at stuffing the LS1 into the Ford Focus? Let's put the WRX STi engine in there with an upgraded turbo! That'd really kill a stock Spec V!!!

A Spec V would own an SVT Focus any day. Even an S-10 with the V6 would give it a good race for the money. I read a couple reviews and even a comparison against a Matrix XRS, Civic Si, VW turbo something, and the SVT was doing low 16s while a Spec V could do probably high 14s or low 15s. All of the cars in the matchup besides the Si owned the SVT in not only acceleration, but in handling and top speed. If you don't believe me, go to the library and check out a recent Car and Driver.
