Had a little accident

Mrvile

Lifer
I just got back from the hospital a few hours ago. Here's what happened:

So I was off boarding in PA today, near Pocono, on one of the more winding hills. I was tearing it up down this hill like I was king of the world, when all of a sudden this chick suddenly appears, sitting right over one of the crests of this hill. I carve hard to the left to avoid her, didn't have the time to look back before I made the turn and see this other girl and knew we were both gonna die. I see sky, I see snow, I see sky, I see snow. The next thing I know I'm lying face up on the snow. I sit up, look over at the girl I hit, apologize and ask if she's OK, and she quickly says it was ok and glides away.

Suddenly I notice that my hand hurt like fvck. There's a throbbing burning pain and I can't move my hand at all. Great, I broke something. I look down and, for lack of a better way to put it, my thumb is gone. There is a lot of blood and I figure I am about to die anyway so who gives a fvck. It takes two to make a snowboarding accident, one always walks out less hurt than the other. Lucky me. I remember some people yelling but that's about it.

I wake up in a white room some time later, having lost track of time (gee I shoulda worn a watch), and I'm pretty sure I'm at the pearly gates ready to be sent to hell. Life was nice, I wish I had written out a will. I think I'd give my computer to my bio teacher, who needs a new one anyway. And I'd probably give my Gamecube to my sister, who plays it more than I do. Too bad.

Well it turns out I'm in the hospital, and a moment later I remember what happened so the first thing I look for is my hand.

The nurse told me I was very lucky that it all happened in the snow, they were able to save it and sew it back on in time. I'm at my dad's house right now with this bigass cast on my hand. I can't feel my thumb yet, the nurse told me it was gonna be nearly a week before I can feel anything, and probably two months before full functionality returns to my thumb.

Am I the luckiest person in the world? I'm an artist, a pianist, a violinist, and I started playing the guitar in July. I'm sure almost losing a thumb isn't really much, but I really haven't been hurt this bad before so it's a big deal to me. Well it's gonna be a long two months, wish me luck!

Wow. If you really will get back full function in your thumb then I'd say you were really lucky. You also might want to add the paramedics and the surgeon who reattached your thumb onto your Christmas card list.

Well it was my right thumb which is a problem. I'll figure something out. Anyway I don't have any pics right now and I'm kinda tired, not to mention I really don't want to be taking pics of my almost-decapitated thumb. Thanks for the support guys.

Wow :Q Glad you're ok.

You should've jumped over that girl. The worst that could happen is you couldn't get enough air and you'd cut her head off. 🙁

Near the knuckle, so I guess it was only half my thumb. They really didn't "sew" it back on but to make things simpler I used that word. Some of the skin on the thumb died too so they had to get a little from my left leg, but that's just a papercut.

Maybe you should give up snowboarding...

lol thanks.

I've been boarding for nearly 5 years, never've gotten hurt before. Yeah I thought about it, but remember that guy that had to cut his arm off when he got trapped mountain climbing?

Glad you have your finger back! At least it wasn't anything more serious, like how my friend got a light concussion while boarding 'cuz he wasn't wearing a helmet! >.<

Anyway, you're lucky and hope you recuperate nicely! 🙂

Oh my GOD! Holy crap!! That's INSANE!!! Glad to hear they were able to save it.

I guess the exact mechanics of HOW it got chopped off is pretty irrelevant, but it would still be interesting to know!!! I'm sure you're curious as well. Probably caught it on the edge of the board and *CHOP* off it came.

You're VERY lucky it was your thumb joint that hit the edge and not your WRIST JOINT. 🙁

 <--for a speedy and complete recovery

ps
I hear Competitive Snowman Building is a much safer, yet semi-type-A personality thing to get into 😉

anyway, that sucks, glad to hear they were able to put it back on, im actually amazed they found it

Good to hear you're alright...

My girlfriend was sleding or something and she tried to avoid hitting a tree and somehow hit her knee on the tree (thank god it wasn't her head)...

She's alright, got it checked out but it was pretty damn swollen.

Ok well I'm gonna go hit the sack, my head hurts and I'm dead tired. I just hope I don't roll over in bed and break the thing off 🙁 this cast should do the job. Thanks for all the support guys!
