Mosslack: updated one of my hack's partition to 10.6.5 and sure enough, it KaPoots. I don't think, KP stands for Kernel Panic. :)

Anyway, Let us know if you find any solution.

changed pmVersion to 21 and then to even just 0, no luck. Just before it kapoots, it seems it's saying something about appleACPIxxxxxxx.., but then the kernel panic's window blocks the view, so....

And yes, I am booting with PC EFI. could not get chameleon working with my board. And yes I can boot fine by adding pmVersion=0 at the start into the now troubled partition.

thanks for putting up with inquiries on our just two years old MBs like scooter said.

say if you spent 1 hour upgrading on a periodic release.

low $50/hr (average between ipod developer and sys admin)

10.5.6
10.5.7
10.5.8
10.6
10.6.3
10.6.4
-------
+$300

$305 boxen + $300 time suckage (rather than just hitting apply update) isn't such a hot deal any more. I'm not trying to pick a fight but with family and heavy workload an hour is precious and maybe it's worth more than $50/hr to you. so that mac tax - isn't so bad. especially when you can pick used macbook air's for $500 now.

What you failed to realize is that some of us enjoy this time spent getting the updates to work on our systems. We may cuss and swear a bit in the process, but that is all part of the fun of doing it. Plus the sense of accomplishment once you get it working is very satisfying, at least to me. And when all is said and done, I have a system which can be expanded, not some crappy used laptop. JMHO

Been away most of the weekend, spending time with family and working on my old Buick. I may get back in the hunt a bit today and this coming week. And the fact that these systems are now 2 years old does play a part in the difficulties of getting them to work with the latest software, etc.

My thinking on this is maybe an update to the later version of Chameleon and tweaking the DSDT some as I'm sure most of us are still using the version which got the system working in the first place. Not many have tried to tweak this DSDT because it worked so well for so long.

Any benefit to 10.6.5 or is it just another number that's changed?

I'm working on an i7 build today for a friend- I guess I'll try a partition with 10.6.5 and see how it goes.

Security Fixes mainly.

I updated my machine from my sig with 10.6.5 and it's working fine. Didn't have to do anything. So if you're using the Tonymac DSDT method, you should be fine.

Thanks. Ended up using the new Kakewalk 3.0. -it specifies using 10.6.5.

Super easy system to setup; literally just a few clicks and done. Amazing how streamlined the process has become.

Gigabyte X58A-UD3R + i7/950 + GTS250/1GB + 6GB DDR3 = one hell of a nice Hackintosh!

This should be right down your lazy a$$ alley Mohkahn! Just Kidding.

I've never tried it, but it appears to be similar to the old app that PCWiz developed awhile back, trying to automate the OSx86 install process on different systems. I used the Tonymacx86 tools to install SL on my MSI P55-GD80 system and it worked very well also.

Haha, well for the record, not my machine personally, but a build for a friend. Heck, I'm jealous of this setup myself! I only wish I got to keep the machines I hack for other people.

I'm closer to pulling the trigger on an i7 system for myself, but not quite yet. Maybe early next year. My P45 machine is still getting the job done, as always.

Kakewalk is like mosslack said, an installer app similar to others. It creates a boot disk specific to the compatible motherboard you pick, (and graphic card in the new version) and sets up the system with all needed drivers/settings. The creator just moved his site here: http://www.kakewalk.se/

The Gigabyte X58A-UD3R is $209 at newegg. No socket 775; 1366 only.

I would only recommend it if you use USB audio. (In my findings, superior to all onboard chipsets anyway.) For the onboard-purists, I think this board requires the voodoo drivers. In my own comparisions, I've found these to be noisy compared to HDA and certainly USB. Otherwise, it's a fantastic board for Hackintosh.

This weekend I also hacked a friend's MSI X58 Platinum system. It's been running 10.6.5 stable since Friday evening. My friend has had this machine for two years but never knew it could be Hackintoshed. Luckily, he had a 9800GT in it- very compatible. I can't wait to see my friend's face tomorrow when he's greeted with his old computer, now reborn as a multi-OS booting Hackintosh.

I'm putting together a little guide for any MSI X58 Platinum owners out there, simply because I was unable to find a very concise guide myself, and I think I stumbled across the simplest way to set these up with no extra hoop-jumping. (Most guides I found required setup from an existing Mac, or to install a distro of 10.5.x first.) I manged to set it up with little hassle using only a boot disk and the Snow Leo DVD for initial install. I'll post links to the guide when I'm done. I wouldn't recommend anyone building from scratch use the MSI X58 Platinum, but for anyone who happens to already have one and wants to hack it.

I never really had any problems with the ASUS 9600GSO 384mb using GraphicsEnabler (10.6->10.6.3)

Does anyone know if the Acer Aspire One (AOD255-2331) That all the stores are selling tomorrow for BF will run OSX?

I'm seriously considering upgrading to an i5 system in the next month or so to replace my aging E4500. Right now I'm looking at the GA-P55-USB3 ($95 on Newegg) because of the price, reported hackintoshability, and 8 SATA ports. I'm also thinking of the i5-750 ($200 on Newegg) based on price, features, and reviews. Does anyone know if there are better options in the same price range?

I ended up going with a more powerful system. I was in Micro Center yesterday and was unable to resist the siren call of the Core i7 950 for $200. Sadly, while they normally carry the Gigabyte X58A-UD3R motherboard, they did not have it in stock at the moment, so I ordered my motherboard and RAM (ended up going with a 6GB kit of G.Skill DDR3 1600) from Newegg. So I won't be able to build the new system until Tuesday. :(

Haha! That's happened with every single person I know and have set up systems for that's started out wanting an i5. They get that gleam in the eye when the possibility of an i7 comes over them, and there's no turning back from there.

Congrats on the new system! Keep us posted when you get everything and set it up.

I received the components on Wednesday, put it altogether, and was amazed to find that my old hackintosh install booted. Not wanting to play with fire, I still did a clean install, using iBoot and Multibeast with a DSDT from tonymacx86. After this, everything except ethernet and graphics were working. I used this driver to get ethernet working, and installed the Nvidia Fermi drivers to get my GPU up and running. Now it's running great, and the i7 is so powerful. It can rip a DVD with Handbrake at 80FPS.

i7 + SSD has been the most insane combo of any computer I've built so far. Absolutely LOVE the power. Congrats on the new build!

I built my machine using the second lifehacker guide. Is it safe to update to 10.6.6? Will I have to reapply anything? I am currently on 10.6.3
