Yup, my mATX board should show up next week. If everything works smoothly then I'll guide it up 🙂

Can't remember what board you chose for this. Refresh my memory please. 😕

Hey Kaido

Nice writeup, thanks for the hard work. I'm getting ready to purchase hardware for my first attempt at a Hackintosh. I realise this thread is rather outdated and you're working on a new one. Have your hardware recommendations changed? I'm shooting for the budget rig so not planning on spending any extra cash anyway.

Thanks

My hack slipped into a strange video mode. It looks like some kind of reverse-video. I was playing around with configuring the icon view, and with a script that automatically positioned my windows, when this happened.

The video mode - when I boot I see the normal white-screen with apple, then the normal blue background for a second, and then it switches into "reverse-video". Menu bar is dark, lettering on menu bar is white. The usual "shadow" effect appears like a highlighted halo; the pop-up menu on the desktop appears black; the letters on that popup appear white. etc.

If I re-boot in safe mode the video appears normal.

I've tried turning off all my login items, still boots in strange "reverse video" mode. I have the nVidia 8600GT fanless,

Any suggestion what to try to get this reset? It's pretty unusable in this mode :-(

I do have a SuperDuper backup from last night, but some apps crash when I start up from that backup.

Thanks!

Yeah a bit, I'm researching stuff on Newegg so I'll try to have those up in the next day or two. Budget rig is the same price (~$300) but has gotten more powerful (E2180 to E5200).

Which install method did you use?

Could be your video card overheating. Are there fans in the case to blow air over the card?

Don't worry, your memory isn't going bad - I haven't posted it yet lol. Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L.

That's good, thought I missed it somewhere along the lines. G31 board, is this currently available or strictly Ebay?

Hit CTRL+ALT+CMD+8. This will invert the colors, and should return you to normal.

Blue ray rips are possible I guess ?
Yup, OSX reads the data on a BD disk just fine. As far as a ripping tool for OSX, I have no idea. In Windows... nodda problem with that either. 😉

I can't wait until OS X/DVD Player (or whatever they rename it to, maybe they will integrate it into Quicktime X in Snow Leopard?) to support BluRay, since that will mean that the Handbrake guys can start working on BluRay ripping in OS X. The current Windows method is about 12 steps too long (I cannot recall how many steps it is, but the fact that Handbrake is just one, really anything more than 2 is too many for most people).

Then I will finally have a reason to add BluRay to my desktop. I already have a PS3, that is my BluRay player and it does a damn fine job.

Currently available and CHEAP: ($52.99)

Hope it works! 🙂

Looks good to me, never did a G31 board before, but my E5200 hasn't found a home yet, so why not! I have 4 Gb of RAM and a case with the board in my NewEgg cart, just checking on a few other options before I check out. 😀

Did you happen to hit ctrl+option+apple+8 at the same time? That puts the monitor in 'negative' mode, which sounds like what you're describing. Try hitting this key combo and see if it switches back.

I'm currently in the same boat- a PS3 for Blu-Ray, but I'd love to add a BD drive to my hack HTPC (in a different room than the PS3) if I could have BD playback in both OS's. I'll probably get one and just use Vista for BluRay for now, and keep my fingers crossed for SnowLeo support.

It does! 😉

Darn, took all the fun out of it! You didn't get it working with the onboard video did you Zaap? I heard this wasn't possible so I have another good ol' reliable and cheap 7200 GS coming with my order.

It'll be great to have a consolidated Kaido guide for it- because the board works perfectly, just the current install method is the usual hodgepodge of scattered 'guide' threads all over insanelymac. I got mine working as I outlined here..

Nope, the onboard video with this board doesn't work- never has, probably never will. No QE/CE for the GMA 3100- so good that you got another card!

Took a look at your link a lot of that looks familiar, so Kaido should have no problem outlining this one. After going through all I've went through with my latest hack (OCZ Neutrino), I'm about hacked out! With all the time put into getting everything working except sleep only to find out it won't work under OS X on battery due to BIOS limitations. I've got a new HD coming for it and I'm gonna install Vista or XP and OS X for those times I need to use it on battery power. This was destined to be a great little netbook until this hiccup. :brokenheart:

I got my UD3P up and running fine using the kit. I ran UInstaller for the post flight procedures and got no errors. However my onboard en0 and en1 both get 169 addresses. I've done all the normal networking and cable modem tricks but it won't grab a address even though my router says it's getting a live 192.168.1.xxx address.

I haven't really seen any info on this problem. Any ideas?

Check to see if R1000.kext is installed to System > Library > Extensions. If it is, try disabling the second Ethernet jack in BIOS.
