Yea.. I saw that recommendation, and that will be what I'm going with. I was only asking because I thought that I could find a little cheaper alternative, but it looks like most of the other IR receivers are around that same price point.

Thanks.

Well, it's only $15, which is a pretty good price. You don't have to get the Mira software if you're just using the Apple Remote functionality. Mira is just nice because it lets you reprogram the Apple Remote for Plex, DVD Player, EyeTV, iPhoto, whatever you want to use it with. But it supports the Apple Remote by default without the Mira software.

Oh I see. That's great then. I have a Harmony Remote, so I'll probably just try and get it to work with that. I don't personally like the Apple Remote very much.

Really? Where did you read this? I am very interested in this...

The insanelymac forum. I'll dig up the threads...

Here's one where he says his ati card works with svideo

nVidia cards largely do not work. There are a few people who have reported very limited success (SVIDEO works booting up but then cuts out, or some random kexts work but break other things...).

My 7900GS works perfectly with the exception of SVIDEO. Both DVI ports work, dual monitor works, but SVIDEO gets me nothing. Furthermore, DVI to SVIDEO does not work. DVI to VGA works however.

Dude    Thanks!! 😀

Looks like it's compatible with the HD 2600XT as well (gotta find out if the 2600XT is supported under Hackintosh!), according to Apple:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2809?viewlocale=en_US

The X1900XT is a little bit hard to find, but I can snag an HD 2600XT new for around $70 on Newegg. That plus the $20 video adapter...I think it's time to replace my XBMC on the old tube TV 😀 It looks like only the X1900XT and HD 2600XT work, and only on the second DVI port due to some built-in switch on that port. I'd be very interested to see what other cards are compatible; this is VERY good news for those of us who want to hook up older television with Composite or S-video - great for watching movies, Final Cut Pro video previews, etc. Good find!

Yeah no problem 🙂

I tried and tried and tried to get my 7900GS to output SVIDEO but no dice 🙁

I want to find a used mac mini for my HTPC.

Yeah I don't care for it either, too small (easy to lose + kids can choke on it) and doesn't control my TV, Receiver, etc. If you get the Harmony Remote, just program it up with the Apple settings I linked in the OP over at the Plex website. Pick up the Mira software if you want the additional Plex functionality.

I've got a 512mb X1900XT and 512mb HD 2600XT on the way to test, along with an Apple DVI to Video adapter. I'll test both cards plus Composite. Really been looking forward to finding a card compatible with S-Video so I could replace my old XBMC's on my SDTVs. I know a lot of people say go HDTV, but there's 30 years of SDTV content and non-HDTV shows just don't look as good on an HD set. I use an HD projector for movies, but now I'll have a daily viewing box as well, whoohoo!

1.0TB Samsung Spinpoint EcoGreen F1 DT 32MB Cache SATA II Hard Drive W/ Native Command Queuing, NoiseGuard, and SilentSeek. Tuned 5400RPM Performance w/Energy Savings. New w/3 Year Samsung Warranty! (SAMHD103UIY)

Gah, if only I didn't have such bad luck with Samsung drives!

I had a 160 SATA go sour on me (thank god for 5 year warranties) and then my newer 500GB SATA went out as well. My 250GB Seagate fell off my desk, while transferring files (I was asleep at the time) and the only problem I had was that any file I had transferred in the previous 2 weeks was wiped. That drive is still working to this day.

Nice! For $10 more you can get the 7200rpm version with free shipping:

We'll never win though. We'll get 1TB drives and then they'll release UltraHD with 250GB movies haha.

Another good deal: E5200 Wolfdale for $84 shipped:

Dual-core 2.5ghz 45nm CPU with Cooler for only $14 more than the stock Allendale I recommended in my Budget Build.

Is this the same one that was on sale at Frys for $80?

(Also, you don't include shipping in your prices. Your "$37" case/psu in addition to being $3.50 more expensive in CA because of tax -- which you obviously don't need to include because who knows where people live -- is actually like $19 to ship).

Hey Kaido I haven't really done any research about Boot123. What is the advantage of Boot123 over the old way? I built one around your June guide (I think it was June maybe July), but recently I noticed I forgot to turn off automatic updates and it has been updating it self a bit lately and I am starting to get lots of lock ups and kernal panics so I am thinking about reinstalling OS X. Should I go with Boot123 or the old way?

This new method is better because:

1. It's a Retail Leopard installation
2. You can Download Updates straight from Apple
3. No funny business with updates or patches
4. No bugs (everything works - DVD, USB, Shutdown, Restart, Sleep, Time Machine, etc.)
5. Easy installation (setup USB, setup HDD, install Leopard, run my toolkit, download updates)

Still, turn off automatic updates. 10.5.6 changes a lot of underlying structure and will probably require some updates to the BOOT132 stick. Also, if you do this retail installation, make sure you don't use Migration Assistant or Time Machine restore from your old Hackintosh because it will copy over the Hackintosh kexts and screw up the retail install. I spent 2 days trying ever which way and there's just no hope - gotta copy your files over manually 😉

Dunno, but it's a pretty good improvement over that Allendale chip!

Yes, I don't include shipping, tax, or software cost in the mix. It's hardware only, actual hardware prices only. Taxes and shipping depends on your area and software depends on your situation - if you already have Leopard, you don't need to buy it. So they're just hardware recipes.

Ok awesome it looks like I am going to go the boot132 method then. A few questions though.

Will an IDE DVD Drive work? I have an IDE-SATA Adapter, but I tried it once with a hdd in OSX and it didn't work so I have my doubts with it.

Also is there anyway to install the boot 132 onto the flash drive without windows? Any OS X applications that will do it?

If I upgrade the bios from F6 to F7 will it mess up my current OS X install?

Also are there any internal spots to put the flash drive maybe on the motherboard? Or would I have to just plug it in the back?

Theoritically yes, you can use the IDE-SATA adapter with the IDE DVD drive, but in practice people have gotten mixed results. Best thing to do with an IDE device is to throw it into a USB enclosure. Unfortunately, the JMicron driver for IDE is extremely buggy and not only causes extremely slow performance, but also intermittent kernel panics. It's not a big deal though, a new SATA drive is only $25 from Newegg (20x Dual-Layer CD/DVD burner with Lightscribe no less), which is probably cheaper than getting a USB enclosure.

No, the bootloader is based on Syslinux, which is a special version of Linux designed to run on Windows. This allows us to install the bootloader quickly and easily using DOS under Windows. The assumption, I supposed, was that most Hackintoshers were migrating from Windows (which makes sense). However, you CAN format it in a Windows XP Virtual Machine, so if you're using VMware or Parallels it's no problem.

No, it won't mess up your current OS X install - in fact, you might as well upgrade to F8 now that it's out of beta - it supports more processors now too.

Just plug the USB stick in the back. You can buy a USB plug that fits on the internal USB headers, they're a bit rare to find but they do exist. You can also buy a USB-to-Headers cable for $5 or $10 if you really want to stick it inside. I supposed you could also get one of those 6-port USB PCI cards that has 2 of the USB ports inside the case and stick it on there, that might work.

Also, don't use Migration Assistant or Time Machine restore to migrate your old Hackintosh install to the BOOT132 installation - it will screw everything up. Gotta do it manually, by hand.

Ok thanks for the reply! I think I am going to try to order a drive this week. Can I get everything setup without the drive? I am going to use the SATA HDD method. I am going to check and see if I can get a VMware or Parallels trial to do that. Thanks for the reply!

Just do the HDD install method - rip Leopard as an image file then restore to a partition on your SATA drive and install from there. Cuts the install time in half too! You don't need a DVD drive connected for installation this way.

Just upgraded my bios to F8, and am about to start restoring leopard to my SATA Drive. Your guides are always great Kaido!
