Just substitute mine for yours and see if it makes a difference. AFAIK, or better yet remember, I got this DSDT from another install guide on Insanely. I'm famous for borrowing others' work and using it for my own :) No sense in reinventing the wheel if you don't have to. It's not that I can't do it, but I just choose not to if I don't have to!

Huh. Okay. I'm just wondering if I did my DSDT "wrong" (or right, for that matter) and I was hoping there was some canonical one that could be tested against. The thing is, with the graphics enabler in Chameleon, you should be able to have a "vanilla"/stock DSDT that should be plug and play universal for a given bios. Just do CMOS reset, networking, audio (if needed) and that's it. Should work for any configuration, and any "working" DSDT should be similar or identical. So maybe I'll decompile yours and mine and see if they're different. I dunno.

I just want this ONE thing to work...it's more important to me than auto-sleep, and perhaps more significantly, I'm just so frustrated that I have no idea how to fix it (or what's wrong). If I can get bonjour working, even if there are other bugs, I think I might be willing to call my install "done".

HELP ME BONJOUR!!! YOU'RE MY ONLY HOPE!

DSDT is far from an exact science. It is pretty easy to use one from another system with perfect results. That is why I suggested you try mine to see if that fixes whatever problem you are having. That would tell you if it is DSDT related or not. AFAIK, the network will work OOTB, so DSDT has little to do with that. The Snow Leopard R1000 kext will make bonjour work, again will little help from DSDT.

Finding a DSDT on the web which allowed the dual video cards in my UD3P was essential for that to work for me, so in that case DSDT made all the difference in the world. Given a single video card however, most any Nvidia DSDT will work, especially if the graphics enabler is... enabled.

Any advice on configuration? e.g. install OSX + Apps on the SSD and keep everything else on HDD? vm/swap file? Were you happy with the speedup?

Thanks!

Depends on the size you get. I actually just ordered a 30GB Vertex (should arrive next week), but I'll mostly be using it for testing and as a scratch disk since it's so small. You'll definitely want your OS on it, and if you can fit them, your apps. Final Cut Studio & Logic Pro fill up something on the order of 90 gigs together, so that's not really an option for me, but if you can manage it then I'd do it.

One thing to consider is a small SSD for boot/apps and then a secondary HDD-based RAID so that you have speedy access to the files without spending a lot on SSD storage. The major files for speed are OS, Apps, and personal user files, but unless you're working with large files a lot, you'll really want to focus on just the OS & Apps, given today's prices on SSD storage. That way it boots fast and your apps open fast, which is really where you want to see the performance boost for the money spent.

Also make sure that you are doing backups - SSD's are getting pretty good but I still don't trust them. If your SSD eats your install, it's nice to have something to fall back on, either with Time Machine or SuperDuper. I always keep a bootable USB stick of OS X around too "just in case". The new-new drives from OWC & OCZ have ECC built-in (like 1/5 of the drive is dedicated to error correction, which I think is awesome), but those are mad $$$.

I do a lot of test installs, both for Hackintosh and just for my side computer jobs (mainly Windows XP or Windows 7) and being able to quickly install to a fast drive, do app installs & final setup, then clone over to the main drive would be really nice. That's why I went with the 30 gig - it was on sale for $79 and seemed like it would be a nice tool for my computer toolbox. I'm also anxious to test it as a scratch drive for Final Cut Pro & Photoshop, as well as boot one of my VMware XP images off it :awe:

My 30GB OCZ Vertex arrived today. Initial results:

http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/3185/ssdd.png

Did a heavy read/write test using a 4GB file size:

http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/1028/moar.png

So more or less I'm getting 230 Read, 144 Write for burst and 156 Read, 226 Write for sustained. The write really boosts up when doing large & long transfers, which is surprising. I was disappointed to see the read drop down to 156, but my Raptor was like 135 MB/s on a good day, so that's still 20 MB/s faster without the heat or noise. I really hated the noise from that thing, haha. Debating whether to get an Icy Dock 3.5" adapter or just a 2.5" eSATA adapter. Think I'll go with an external case for now and use my eSATA to SATA cable for doing internal installs & clones.

Oh awhile ago, just for testing. I haven't finished testing all of my FCP plugins. Someday I'll have time to do it all...:D

So you are still primarily using Leopard? The reason I ask is I am not thrilled with SL and am considering going back to Leopard. I have some odd things happening with the wireless on my Macbook and a few other small things, nothing major, but I also do not like change. lol For me Leopard just works!

Yeah Leopard has been 110% stable for me. Zero issues, no complaints on 10.5.8. My current biggest problem with Snow is the USB bug in 10.6.3, it causes either your mouse or keyboard to disconnect on wake-from-sleep on Hacks (and some Macs too, I think), which is SUPER annoying because you have to dig around the back of your case and unplug/replug it. I sleep my computer multiple times a day so it bugs me a lot :\

So far the only Snow Leopard problems I'm finding are ridiculous file permission issues with my NAS server. For some stupid reason, Apple seems to have butchered certain aspects of file permissions when using smb shares. I never saw these issues in Leopard.

For example, trying to backup or copy certain (random it seems to me) files to the server, SL will insist that I don't have the proper permission to copy the file, therefore it will simply fail to copy. I can copy the same file from local drive to drive, but not to the smb share. Even worse, I've seen it essentially delete a backup off the server- if it's a file with the same name being replaced, it will delete the old, start to copy the new, then fail, thus no updated copy, no old copy, just a deletion of the old file. That sort of destructive behavior is unforgivable from an OS- Apple should really fix this kind of thing.

From the other end, some files copied from Snow Leo to the server can't be deleted/modified from Windows- the dialogue will claim the files are owned by 'Unix user' and can't be touched. Why would I want my OS to create locked files on my network, and randomly at that?

Reading various forums, SL misbehaving with NAS and smb shares is pretty common, so it's definitely not a Hackintosh thing. I wish Apple would really get serious about this type of thing. The goofiest thing is, I saw none of these issues in Leopard, so it's like they've gone backward, not forward with networking.

Edit: Right after I wrote this I did more serious Googling and found the solution to the first part- edited the smb.conf file on my NAS server to say: unix extensions = no and voila! Problem solved! Haven't tried yet from Windows to see if it also fixes the other problem.

You ever go for a netbook yet? I've been playing around with my HP Mini 311 and now have a working system based on meklort's NBBM/NBI install method. He is considered a true genius in Dell circles and is quickly becoming known the same in netbook circles in general.
As cool as an OSX netbook is, I just have no need for one. I do own a Gateway LT2104u that I bought to use for writing while on vacation, but no chance of hacking it as it has the Intel GMA3150 graphics that are incompatible.

Basically, I'm holding out for an iPad- probably I'll look into a 2nd gen. (I rarely if ever dive in 1st gen on things.)

So, while in my search for hints about this Bonjour issue, I start googling and some people talk about having to reset their routers, and that fixing things. So after a day or two of figuring that wouldn't matter, I decide to try it. That, combined with a kext Kaido sent me, worked. Sort of.

First thing is, the kext Kaido gave needs to go in /e/e, not /s/l/e. Also, the whole "change network-root to root" thing is a little confusing because you have to dig in the contents of the kext...twice. (Because the R1000 kext is embedded in the IOnetworkfamily kext).

So, Apple remote, etc, worked. Once.

Shut down iTunes, restart it...no go. Which is pretty darn confusing. I got the same behavior trying to get Xbox media streaming to work from my Hack (with Connect360, PS3 Mediaserver or Rivet) with a DD-WRT router in bridge mode. It's like the routing tables get screwed up or something.

Luckily, I have another router (same model) and it's got DD-WRT on it (see above!) so I'll swap that out and see if that changes anything. It's possible than when bonjour magically stopped working on my 10.5.8 install was when I flashed my router to the latest Linksys firmware. I'm not 100% that's it, because I don't really remember flashing it all that recently, but it's certainly possible.

Just because I know you all care and I like talking to myself. =]

Having used the iPad since last week - I would say that if you have a desktop, you can skip out on the laptop. If you just want social & entertainment stuff, it's a beast. Internet surfing is super awesome, plus email, Twitter, Facebook, whatever. If you need to do some mobile crunching, you'll still need a laptop, but I could almost see myself living on nothing BUT an iPad, lol.

My pipe dream - crappy cell phone, iPad 3G, Snow Leopard Server (storage), and some Boxee Boxes for the tubes. A life of simplicity and happiness :D

I have some similar issues with FreeNAS and SL, but nothing that has been serious as of yet. I now have a P4 running 10.4.7, so my plan is to install this board into the server case I bought some time ago and use it for my file server. I never had any kind of problems like that at all when I had my G4 DA server, so hopefully this will take me back to those blissful days.

Guess I just feel differently as I have 3 of them at the moment, all running 10.6.3 very happily. To each his/her own I suppose.

This is one device I shall NEVER own. Of course I've never owned an iPod or iPhone either. I don't get it, I mean, why? Besides the wow factor, which I guess is a plus, what practical use is it? And keep in mind I mean what will it do that I can't do with a computer. Oh wait, there are a few things it can't do compared to a computer. Hmmm, maybe that is what is so cool about it. It's just so cool that it doesn't need to prove itself. I must be getting old...

I'm starting to consider donating a board to you :D

Don't do it! Then you would have to go to his house and install it, then you would have to troubleshoot his network, And while you're there he would be playin' with your iPad. It just isnt' worth it!

I swear...some people are so scooter

JK scooter, you've come a long way baby, surely you can fix this minor glitch.

Yeah, but for me, putting things in perspective, my wife and I own 6 laptop-devices besides the netbook, ranging from older but still working mini notebooks, a G4 PowerBook, iBook, and a year old PC laptop. All I need a laptop for is writing, so as long as it'll run Word, and surf the web, I'm good to go with just about any laptop made in the last 10 years.

I just got the netbook for travel cause they're so small, have great battery life (unlike my older mini-notebooks) and realized I didn't care all that much which OS I use just to watch a movie on a plane, or type in a WP or websurf during my travels.

I have to ask you though- have you seen an iPad in person? I was skeptical when I first heard about them, but since holding one in my own hands and using it- oh man! It was definitely tech-love at first touch. The thing is just slick.

What would you use it for? Believe me, I predict that after a little bit of use, you wouldn't want to put it down. I already can't do without my iPod Touch; I surf with it, read/write emails, play games, read books, read comic books (awesome Marvel comics app!) use it as a remote control for my HTPCs, make Skype calls, record voice notes, watch TV shows and movies anywhere, remote into my home computers from anywhere, etc. etc... let's see, was there something else major I do with it? Oh yeah, that's right- play music files! ('magine that, with an iPod!)

I'd do all of that and more with an iPad, with a much better interface. As good as I *thought* the touch control was on the iPod/iPhone- the iPad feels way better. I'd love to have one with the stand they show and bluetooth keyboard and just use it as a portable desktop wherever I go. I predict even you, mosslack, anti-new-gadget guy, would find a gazillion uses for one and in no time be claiming no one could ever pry it from your grip! :D

BTDT, just can't get excited over them. Sure, you can carry along a BT KB, but my netbook already has that. Sure you can... To make a long story short, nothing you named that I can't do equally well with my netbook. So it doesn't have the WOW factor, that is a given, but I'm a full function kind of guy, gadgets just don't do anything for me. Heck I didn't get a GPS until just recently and then only used it once.

Plus I'm not a person on the go like you guys. My 9-5 existence doesn't really need gadgets. When I come home from a hard day of delivering the mail (okay, laugh, but it really is hard work sometimes), I like to sit in front my UD3P with it's 3 monitors and catch up on what's happening today. I do use my Neutrino netbook at work, but we only recently got a hot spot there and the only thing I do with it is listen to my music collection.

So why did I buy 2 more netbooks? Simple, to hack them. That is where I get my enjoyment. I will probably end up giving one to my granddaughter who will be going to college very soon. And I leave the Neutrino at work all the time except when I need to update it, so that just leaves me with one for the road on those rare occasions I do travel. Plus I also have a Toshiba laptop if I want something with a bigger screen and better KB.

And btw, I have no problem with those who get that kid in a candy store look in their eyes when they see an iPad, that's just not me.

It was my router.

I don't wanna say I KNEW IT, but, well, it was my router. Still worked, but was configured incorrectly (or, rather, incorrectly for bonjour). I swapped out a DD-WRT router, thinking that would be a good test, but that never worked either, and my G4 (presumably connected to the same router) worked OOB, so it was darn near impossible to figure out what was going on. But I set my normal, stock Linksys firmware router to restored defaults and bingo, everything works. I'm thinking it has something to do with multicast and I'm thinking "when it changed" (to borrow from William Gibson here) was when I was trying to get media sharing with my Xbox to work, and at my whits end I tinkered with every known possibility on the router.

So I'm still at 10.6.2, but I'm pretty sure everything is working. The thing might even auto-sleep! I'm just glad it works again now. (And yes, it works in my 10.5.8 install too)

FYI, I have updated the DS3L guide to go directly to 10.6.3 with a section at the end for updating from 10.6.2 to 10.6.3. This new method uses VoodooHDA instead of AppleHDA to avoid future update problems hopefully. I'm not a big fan of VoodooHDA, but if it makes future updates easier than I am prepared to put up with it's initial install quirkiness. I'm beginning to think those who use the USB dongle for sound are the smart ones.

The new guide can be found here: http://groups.google.com/group/hq-a/web/install-guide-gigabyte-ga-p35-ds3l-usb-10-6-x
