Hacking into your cell phone

It's time for a new cell phone. I plan on sticking with Verizon because of the coverage area. Reception is my number 1 priority, and everyone says good things about the V265/260, V710, and V815's strong RF. I do not care about mobile web and all that crap, I use my phone as a phone and a text messager, and that's about it.

The only features that I'd like are ringtones and pictures. But from what I can tell, you have to pay Verizon to do any transfering of these to/from your phone. What a crock! I understand there are some ways of hacking into the phone and doing this without paying Verizon? How easy is it to connect these phones to my computer?

I've been reading howardforums, but I think the folks over there are so advanced that I can't make heads or tails of what they're talking about. I don't want to get that into it.

*edit* To make the title more clear. Who knows anything about hacking into phones, specifically Verizon Motorolas?

www.phonescoop.com

Theres a link on the left for "Phones"

The reviews are sometimes good, sometimes crap. (Many are written by 12 year-olds with poor grammar.) But you can get a better idea of what you like.
If a phone has a hundred reviews then the average score is probably useful info.

A phone isnt a computer with Bank information on it.
Why would you need to hack it. Or do you mean unlock it?

I have googled before to find unlock codes for my phone.
But you can only unlock Nokia 3000's and above, and the 3300 seems to be absent from all those lists.

I would really like to have the Motorola A630 with Verizon.
Or better yet, have the Motorola A780 on ANY american service.

The E815 is quite hackable. I'm sure you learned that from www.howardforums.com
You're best staying over there for the question asking, since it is a cell phone site.

You are VERY far out of the loop mister
Verizon, is a CDMA carrier, "unlocking" phones pertains to GSM phones. You can't use an A630 on Verizon or Sprint (or Nextel for that matter, but lets not involve iDEN). And you can use the A780 w/US carriers, you'd need to import it from somewhere like myworldphone.com or eBay, and its just a matter of putting a Cingular or T-Mobile SIM card in there.

I am a Noob, thank you sir.

So can I put the ATT card I've been using (under Cingular) into the A780?
I have seen it around for 499-699 depending on the seller.

I haven't even found a FAQ over there for the noobies to explain the basics. What kind of things can I do to the 815, and what does it take to do them?

I've done a considerable amount of Motorola V-series hacking on my cell. For what you want to do, you need to get a hold of three things:

1. A mini-USB cable that'll allow you to plug your phone into your computer.
2. The "P2kman" drivers, which is about 50KB and has the Motorola USB Modem driver you need for your cell phone to be recognized by your computer (here or here).
3. Mobile PhoneTools, which you can technically get for free.

If you can't find these things on your own (people like to put them online for free download), send me a PM and when I get home from work in about 12 hours I'll set you up.

Thanks! This is what I'm looking for. So any opinions on the hackability of the 3 phones I mentioned (265/710/815)? Capabilities and limitations of each?

Howardforums is about the best place to get the information you want.

Verizon disabled OBEX in their phones and there is no way to enable it, even with a flash or a flex. So you hit the nail on the head. They want you to pay them to transfer files to you phone.

On the V710, there are a couple of bits that need to be turned on to enable ringtone and picture transfer, but you can only do it then with Multimedia Studio within Motorola Phone Tools, which isn't free.

After the hack, you can do it via USB or bluetooth. I've done it on my work V710 and it isn't that hard. You just have to sort through the information at howardforums.

The best way to do it is go with another provider that uses the GSM Motorolas.

Verizon has two ways of downloading ringtones, etc...

One is through Get It Now. You have to pay for the airtime to use this (but minutes are cheap anyway...)

The other is vtext.com which is free but does not work with every cell phone.

Yes, you have to pay for the ringtones...

Because I don't understand what's going on. From what I can tell, you pay to download ringtones. Fine. But to get them to my cell phone, I have to pay to transfer the files???

And if I take a picture from my cell phone, how do I get it off of there? PAY verizon to email it to myself? Give me a break.

The 710 and 815 have Bluetooth, but it appears to be purposely limited by excluding OBEX so you can't transfer files to and from your PC. Instead, they want you to pay them to transfer your own files. Can I do it with a cable, and if so what do I need to hack in the phone to make this possible?

Where can I download a mini-USB cable??? I sure could use one of those.
