How much do the users of Reddit want to see naked pictures of Jennifer Lawrence, Selena Gomez, Kate Upton, and dozens of other female celebrities? If The Fappening is any indication, there are at least 100,000 people just sitting at their computers waiting for more nude photos to be uploaded to the internet.

For a short period of time today the subreddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/thefappening) was taken down, only to be restored a short time later.

Realizing that many people wanted live updates of the hacked nude photos, the following URL went viral: http://www.reddit.com/live/thwsx6wkbysn. That URL posts real-time updates as pictures, gifs, and potentially even some yet to be released videos, are upload to the internet. The board is being moderated by Reddit user NotSafeForWhales. That user account appears new with only 89 link karma and 53 comment karma.

According to a recent report from the live broadcast, the leaker has more than 2GB worth of files that they may release to the public for free.

At the time of this post, The Fappening has 101,276 live viewers.

The real problem is that someone needs to teach these celebs how to take HD/HQ shots of themselves... not crappy selfies...

You would think that most of them are gonna be using the latest Apple products. Which means they'd have had, what, like 8MP or better cameras for...three years?

Aside from the obvious 'eight megapixels of shit is still shit'...as in, a real 2-3MP camera from 10+ years ago can yield superior quality...I'm sure there is something in Apple's software that is to blame. Somewhere between the camera and the online storage, that shiz ain't 8MP anymore...

Meh.

I'd be less than bothered if someone stole my knob shots.

Which reminds me, I need to take and upload some knob shots. That'll teach the bastards not to hack my clouds. :colbert:

Can I interest you in PlatypusCloud, sir? Your knob shots are always safe with me. :ninja:

Anand's first order of business is to fix this error with the Apple products.

Geez, do you guys really think everyone is as tech geeky as you are? I know lots of people who make multi-6-figure salaries or more and only update their phones every 2-3 years. But yeah, even high end modern phones take lousy pix in the dark.

---

But that's not the point of all of this anyway. The bigger point of all of this to me is to find out what security exactly was breached, and how.

Cuz, as much as many of the haters are saying these actors were idiots for uploading to the cloud, I suspect many of the same people have no problem sending private pix via email to themselves or whatever. No, not necessarily nudes, but private information on the net nonetheless.

I also wonder how many here have turned on remote access for their home NASes. Do you guys remember the last Synology exploit? People were getting emails telling them their NASes were encrypted, and would have to pay a ransom to decrypt it.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/8337/synology-advises-users-of-synolocker-ransomware

I have neither enabled remote NAS access nor do I use iCloud for photos, but I do have a couple of videos of my daughter on Vimeo, and I do email pix of my family members to myself and my family. I understand that there are risks, but nonetheless, I would consider it a criminal act if someone hacked my account and gained access.

The front-facing camera has poorer resolution / image quality than the main one on the back.

if you're gonna take a photo or yourself licking some guys balls and upload it, don't act shocked or offended when someone sees it. Just enjoy that people actually care.

To note, I do own an iPhone and iPad, but I don't really use iCloud for much. Although, if I had to guess, these people are probably just turning iCloud back-up on and taking photos without realizing that it's backing them up "to the cloud." It's called Photo Stream. I wonder if they just had their iTunes passwords hacked, because without two-step authentication, any device can connect with just the password.

I guess I'm just trying to clarify that they're probably not uploading the photos on purpose, but it shows that most people don't understand half of the features on their phone. Also, I'm fairly certain that enabling/disabling Photo Stream is one of the options that pops up whenever you setup an iPhone ever since iOS 7 (or maybe 6). So, it's not like you can miss it!

I hear all the underground porn rings operate through Facebook now.

HELLO SEEDY PORNHACKER #7, DO YOU KNOW SEEDY PORNHACKER #12?

I'm still under 30 and I don't know who the fuck any of them are. Lawrence is that pouty twat from those dumb book movies, and I was thinking Kate Upton married Prince something or other but I may have gotten mixed up there...

That's, like, literally all that is recognizable.

That could be a great tag line for a product.

"PlatypusCloud, taking special care of your knob shots since 2014"

But that's not the point of all of this anyway. The bigger point of all of this to me is to find out what security exactly was breached, and how.

It's sounding like a long running, targeted hack using a vulnerability in the find my iPhone thing.

People have been brute forcing the passwords on individual accounts and taking any nudes. Looks like it's been going on for awhile as well, one of the victims stated that her nudes had been deleted a long time age.

It seems that there's people who are willing to spend lots of time and effort just to see bad quality nudes of people that they don't know.

Hmmm…

Apple patches 'Find My iPhone' exploit

Apple has patched an exploit with its Find My iPhone online service that may have been used by hackers to gain access to personal photos stored on iCloud accounts belonging to some 100 celebrities.

While it's arguably poor security when it includes personal data, the lack of a restricted number of login attempts is hardly "an exploit". Although, unless this was done in a distributed manner or at a very slow pace, you'd have to think that Apple would've noticed all of these requests coming in for a specific account. Sure, I've mangled my password half a dozen times on a few occasions, but a few thousand times? :p

Well, it's bad security nonetheless. Not a tech guy myself, but I would have thought all sites like that would have locked things out after 25 tries or something. I know that some sites after about the 5th error will warn me, or else will just lock me out for 15 minutes.

Also, wouldn't it make sense to send out an email or something after the password entry has failed 15 times in a row?

BTW, I just checked the strength of my home WiFi guest network's password. It consists of multiple dictionary words strung together with some capitals in there, and some numeric digits. To my surprise, it came up as being very strong. I guess the fact that stringing together multiple words as one makes it much harder to crack.
