With new technology, isn't it possible to theoretically make such a thing happen?

Send someone a virus that would change a power voltage setting or something...

or maybe send a proggy that would flash the BIOS to a version that would jack the core voltage up to twice the right amount.

It may not make the system explode, but it would eventually cause smoke to fly...
