Some of the world's best-known hackers unveiled a plan this weekend to offer free software to promote anonymous Web surfing in countries where the Internet is censored, especially China and Middle Eastern nations.

An international hacker group calling itself Hactivismo released a program on Saturday called Camera/Shy that allows Internet users to conceal messages inside photos posted on the Web, bypassing most known police monitoring methods.

In addition, "Mixter," an internationally known German hacker, said Hactivismo was preparing in coming weeks to launch technology, which if adopted widely could allow anyone to create grassroots, anonymous networks where Internet users worldwide could access and share information without a trace.

I don't know, this seems like it could be used against us in many ways unfortunately...

but I'm all for allowing people to have access to whatever they want, and not letting stupid companies like the RIAA or MPAA rule our lives...

Im going to try not to be mean (because this is almost a legitimate statement), but if I get mean, I apologize in advance ;)

So can encryption, so can guns, so can knives, so can sticks, so can rocks, so can just about anything out there. Computers can be used against us in many many ways. We dont want to ban any of those (well, less intelligent people want to ban encryption and some people want to ban guns (I think they are less intelligent, but I understand)). The benefits, ie helping people that are being treated like crap by their own governments see more than just what is accepted by said government, outweighs the downsides, ie these technologies potentially aiding sinister types communicate with each other.

I didnt think you were against it, just wanted to show everyone how banning stuff like encryption (something peek-a-booty uses and possibly the basis of camera/shy) is idiotic at best. :)

well, I knwo a lot of things can be used against us... but then again, having a country tell the people that live there what they can and can't view is very wrong imho...

Oh that's fantastic. Let's give the terrorists even MORE tools to communicate anonymously over the internet. Thank you hackers. Next time please take a step outside to the real world and learn to be a little more street smart.

I guess you want to ban sporks too? Terrorists can use them for stabbing people! Hell, ban rocks! Terrorists can throw them at people! Privacy and the proliferation of information is more important than the possibility that an evil person could misuse a tool. Blame the person, not the tool.

EDIT: I just want to say, this is getting old. I dont want to have to fight a battle thats been going on since before I was born, especially since there are no new arguements against.

I guess you couldn't really fault me if I were to randomly disperse a whole lot of loaded weapons to little kids, and one of them ended up killing someone. Blame the kid right?

Blame the parent that didnt teach their kid right from wrong. Its definitely not the fault of the guns.

Do you really believe that censorship and lack of privacy are good things or do you think about these issues at all?

I'm with the monkey man myself. I'm so sick of hearing people whine and complain "terrorist this and terrorist that." I can't imagine being that scared of living that you'd be willing to give up personal rights. We're a nation based on our value of freedom, and when someone wants to bring a little of that freedom to another nation and break them out from the control of a repressive government, they get yelled out because of "terrorists."

Precisely. It's no wonder I hate labels. If you want to live in a "Terrorist"-free environment, then go live in a jungle or something. Leave the rest of us with our freedom intact.
