Hey. I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but I have a question. I'm heading out to buy a router in like 3 hours i think, so I hope yall reply by then.

But anyways, I saw on the internet you could hack the WRT54GS and WRT54GS (both available at best buy, its where I'm going), and boost the signal.

But I'm also considering the Belkin Pre-N. It was rated high on cnet.

I'm mainly going to be using the router for my dorm/apartment. My computer is going to be connected via lan to the router. Then my print server (dlink gold), will be connected to my xbox 360 and my hp printer in the other room.

I'm also getting a Tivo and will be streaming video from that to my computer.

So my question is, which router do you think would be best?

Thanks alot!

Update: Here's a link to how to do the WRT54GS hack just fyi

I have the WRT54G and love it. However, if you go check out the wiki/FAQ at www.dd-wrt.com, they recommend some other router (buffalo, maybe?) as faster with the hacked firmware.

If you want your router to do all sorts of neat stuff (multiple ssids, VPN server, ssh server, DDNS client, WOL, etc etc), then definetly go for a hackable router. For a dorm room, you dont need to boost the signal at all. Wireless-N is supposed to be much faster, but I've had only a little trouble streaming video at 54mbits. If you're on LAN for video streaming then you're definetly good to go. Also, the N-router will be much more expensive.

cliffs: between the two, get the WRT. However, check the website and get the best one for the hacked firmware.

N will be required for streaming HD (but you also need N clients) as G just can't sustain the throughput for a 10Mb/s HD video.

I have the Pre-N...and i cant say i'm very happy with it...i cant play online games on more than one computer like if my friend is over cuz we both just lag very bad. The router just doesnt like to share bandwidth or something but I emailed belkin and they suggested it was my games fault which is bs since my linksys works fine. And this is with the network cables plugged in, not wireless. Also if you want to get the best signal for wireless you need a pre-N card for your laptop...its pretty sweet though, like 100mbs! Just wish it would play games...trying to use it as an access point now...
